3 out of 5 stars good job indeed   November 30, 2005

(I am not a native speaker, please overlook my style)

This book is a most entertaining read: neatly written, very fast paced, fairly original in its storyline.

It happens to belong to a collection of gay erotica, but I would much more define it as a vampire story with explicit sex in it. Moreover I think it is so much more than trash fiction: it belongs to a middle range between one-read-only novels and literature.

If the author fails to achieve literature is through a lacking characterization and a lack of polish in some plot twists.

The three main characters are well depicted, deep, but they act inconsistently: for example we are told that Rafael feels guilty about his hunt for blood but the theme is treated goofily: one moment he is torn by guilt, the other one he just thinks about his clothes; another point is that one cannot understand how his new lover, a rather self righteous, moralist guy can deal with his beloved being a killer, without facing the fact with a little more thought. Several remarks of this kind could be made.

It is a pity Mr Bowen did not decide to edit these inconsistencies: a little more care, a better choice of words, a couple of paragraphs would have been enough to settle them and to let us read a perfectly enjoyable novel.

As it is, it is nonetheless a swift, good read.

4 out of 5 stars Not half bad...   November 25, 1999

This was interesting. I usually think vampires are silly - after that dreadful Rice-woman's stuff - but Gary Bowen provides a more twisted tale. And it makes such a change to have a gay vampire - a really gay one, not one of the macho butch cliches which are becoming so popular these days. Raphael is a true queen - a kinky queen at that. The story drew me in - it's fairly un-pc, which was also refreshing - and kept me reading to the end. On top of all that, I got aroused: no mean feat at my age, Mr Bowen. Thanks for making an older man happy. I'd recommend this book to anyone, and urge the publishers to get it back in print pronto

3 out of 5 stars This book definatly appeals to a very specific genre.   November 19, 1997

This book began interestingly, and then jumped around a bit, finally settling on a decidedly effeminate protagonist. Although I am sure that this book appeals to a certain crowd, I found the "hotter" scenes to be more humorous than erotic. Perhaps it is my personal bias, but I find it hard to not smirk at the thought of a middle-aged man screaming "queen bitch!" at an ageless male vampire who is too shallow and flaky to retaliate. I would have been far more prepared for the nature of this story had the back-of-the-book-blurb been more descriptive.

1 out of 5 stars boring!   May 2, 1999

Unrealistic characters, everybody in this book is an idiot. Wooden and superfluent plot and by far too much ado about sex. More rediculous than erotic. Boring!

2 out of 5 stars Not really my style   October 12, 1998

This book seemed more to be a gay S&M fantasy novel that happened to have vampires in it rather than a vampire novel. I was rather disappointed by how unrealistically the characters seemed to respond to different things, and further disappointed by the inconsistency of the vampire's powers themselves.
