An All-Nighter November 3, 2006 24 out of 24 found this review helpful
As a kid, I used to secretly go through my sister's stash of Harlequin Romance novels. Since there's a high probability that my sister will see this post, so much for secrets! Well, a few days ago, I heard about "Discreet Young Gentleman." A trashy romance novel (I use the term lovingly), but with two guys?! It was a dream come true! I ordered it, received it yesterday, and only planned to read a couple of chapters. Well, I kept telling myself I would put it down... and then before I knew it, it was 5am in the morning and I had finished the book.
It's got dashing young men, ghosts, class conflict, internalized homophobia, severe body image issues (yes, really), and some rather hot lovin' romance novel-style. The author, MJ Pearson, injects a great deal of humor into the novel, but it's never saccharine. The comedic moments are done just right, and add to the poignancy of the lovers' dilemma. MJ Pearson is quite talented and I'm looking forward to reading more of her work!
Superlative Gay Regency January 28, 2007 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
In my opinion, Ms. Pearson has a gift for Gay Regency romances that many Straight authors of romance might envy.
Though a rather short novel, "Discreet Young Gentlemen" successfully presents its two protagonists believably and develops them to the reader's satisfaction - or at least to my satisfaction. Where some period authors bog the reader down in interminable "scene-setting" minutiae, Ms. Pearson presents such complementary details effectively and enjoyably, without ever making one wonder (as some authors unfortunately do) where the story went after reading three pages of technical data on wescots or paniers. The story moves smoothly; the romantic development is warm and sexy without ever becoming maudlin or cheap; there is adventure, mystery, humour and, of course, all the delights to be discovered when characters find themselves on "the path to True Love."
Ms. Pearson is definitely an author of Gay romance whose works I can recommend. I've read both of her existing books and recommend them to anyone who enjoys this genre. I can't wait to see the third book the author is working on which, I understand, will deal with an English soldier and a French gentleman during the Napoleonic Era.
Charming M/M Romance! December 17, 2006 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
MJ Pearson has done it again and I am delighted to add this to my list of favorite historical gay romance. This love story of a gentleman and a prostitute is a delightful read. The characters of our 2 heroes could not have been more different and MJ has done a great job developing them. Dean and Rob are endearing and I just have to find out what happened to them next. Like the previous reviewer comment this book is simply addictive. Good thing it is short enough to finish in one night! I prefer this to MJ's previous effort as I like my romance to keep the lovers together throughout the plot. MJ has also done a fine job exploring Dean's and Rob's attraction towards one another and the initial crossfire is fun.
She's done it again! December 23, 2006 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Yes, fans of Price of Temptation, the author M.J.Pearson is a "she" and she has indeed done it again. I started reading Discreet Young Gentleman rather late in the evening and kept trying to put it down so I could get to sleep at a decent hour. But it became a losing battle as I could neither resist reading the rest of the ghost story (more than one ghost story as it turned out), nor leave Rob and Dean bereft, carriageless, (and barefoot) after being robbed. And then there was the mounting tension of the growing romantic attraction between the two midst all their trials and tribulations. Again M.J. tells the tale with great historical accuracy and unrelenting humor. So I read it all the way through and the price of that temptation was a grouchy, sleepy day at work. Ah well, I'll just start her next book early in the day. On a Saturday. Can't wait.
I'd Hoped for More January 1, 2007 8 out of 11 found this review helpful
Having read 'Price of Temptation' and enjoyed it, I pre-ordered this book, excited about another romantic, boys-love read. Therefore, it pains me to say how disappointed I was with this novel.
While it still delivered in the sense of romance (as in, there was payoff), and while the author fixed the point of view problem from the previous book, the plotting in this novel was so predictable and ineffectual as to be tedious. The author had too many themes--architecture, ghost stories, storytelling--none of which connected or were resolved very well at all. It lent a very messy feel. The author also posed questions about characters and their motivations and yet left them unanswered. As a whole, the writing felt rushed and pieced together. Where the occasional moments of colloquialism in the previous book were forgivable for their infrequence, the extremely modern and loose dialogue in this book stuck out terribly. The most interesting aspect of the book was the subplot revolving around the coachman. I wish I could say the main couple had been more intriguing since that's what I read the book for. The excellent chemistry that the author created between Stephen and Jamie in 'Price of Temptation' was not recreated here between Rob and Dean. And while I like the occasional use of fragments for effect, they showed up far too much throughout the book--so much, I resigned to see it as writing error and not effect.
I madly recommended 'Price of Temptation' to my fellow slasher friends--and will continue to do so--but that same enthusiasm will not be carried over into the author's second work.
