 This is the book to buy for your Neanderthal Coach September 25, 2008
These authors nail it. If you have been stunned by the cave-man competitive tactics of your kid's sports team coaches, this book will at least set you at ease that what you have seen is real and that it is a bizarre, twisted way to develop a love of sport in youth. As one reviewer put it, THIS IS the book to nail to your coaches door, if only they would read it. Our football coach recently told his 7th graders that if it wasn't broken or bleeding, he didn't want to hear about it. During that game, the team had a fractured knee cap and a snapped tooth. Sending sheep to slaughter in the name of victory - with 7th graders! If you have been there, and want to organize your thinking about what is wrong and how to fix it, you will not regret purchasing this book.

Push! Push! Push! That's what the 'normal' parents need to do with this book. Push it onto as many people as we can - spread the religion that Bob talks to. It's some of the best common sense writings that I've seen in years. We, along with Bob, can change youth sports in this country. We need to reach out again and again to our coaching staffs, league administrators and city/town programs and ENCOURAGE them to read this book. We need to do this for the children!! Great job Bob! It's time for a sequel!

As head coach of my son's 3rd/4th grade boys basketball team, until I read this book I hadn't realized how much time and court space I wasted! Applying Bob's philosophies pertaining to basketball allowed for fun to be the main focus on my team and fun is what they had!
A Must Read for All Parents With Athletes - Regardless of talent. February 24, 2008
Searching for many answers during my youngest son's "T" ball days (2000) I came across this book which had a profound impact on me. Alot of what I believe in, I could not say; but knew there was a better way. This book gave me scripts; plus it changed me as a father, coach, and supporter of the game. Today I umpire to carry the message and give back to the game; and to be a calming effect on those that require it.
If you are looking for an approporiate way to parent an athlete in today's "win at all cost" culture, "Just Let The Kids Play" is for you. While providing a broad perspective of all sports, it narrows some of it so you can feel the urge to change; to be a better parent/coach; and most of all "to get the hell out of the way" so "they can play". I look back and cringe at my conduct yesterday; but delighted that I have reformed. Doing the right thing is often not easy. Read it and witness yourself. You'll be glad.

Kids need to play and books like this that emphasize this concept are, in my opinion, much needed. Kids also need protection from those who would take advantage of them, whcih is why I also recommend: "Everything You Never Wanted To Know About Your Nonprofit Corporation" by Ms. Cellaneous, The Unknown Attorney.
