Product Description The First Biographical Portrait Ever of This Key Political Figure
Written by a leading journalist and filled with more than 100 color photographs, this authoritative and up-to-the-moment new biography provides much-needed perspective on one of the most important figures on the national political stage.
An lively overview of Obama’s life, this timely book begins with his difficult childhood as the son of a Kansas-born college student and a black Kenyan who abandoned the family, moving through his election to president of the Harvard Law Review (the first black student ever), his early political career (including his loss of a congressional race in 2000), his own family life with wife Michelle and two daughters, his 2004 election to U.S. Senator, and his emergence as a symbol of hope for America. Including his own words and comments from both his critics and supporters, Hopes and Dreams is essential reading for all those interested in the man who is being talked about as a candidate for our highest office.
No political figure in recent memory has generated the interest that Obama has, and many compare his appeal to that of a rock star. Only forty-five years old, Barack Obama is certain to play an important role in America’s future. Here is his inspiring story to date, in words and revealing images.

Wonderful book September 6, 2007 37 out of 39 found this review helpful
It is more of an outline than a fully fleshed out view of Senator Obama, but very well written. The photos are fantastic, also. I would suggest delving deeper after reading this by purchasing the 'Audacity of Hope', which really shows the depths of this man's knowledge on not only political but social complexities that have shaped his life and helped mold him into one of the most amazing candidates of a generation.
A good intro to Barack Obama. March 1, 2008 29 out of 36 found this review helpful
My first impression of the book was that it would have great photos and little substance. I was correct about the photos, wrong about the rest. "Hopes and Dreams" is an overview of Barack Obama's life covering his childhood as a bi-racial child, his search for information about his father and how that affected him. His decision to pass up a Wall Street career and opting to take a lower-paying job training as a grassroots organizer in Chicago. It also covers his journey through politics and eventual decision to run for president.
His mistakes regarding drugs is discussed as well as his middle name.
Here are a few quotes from the book:
"He is a voice of strength and moderation,an American success story."-John McCain page 46.
"We must understand that the might of our military has to be matched by the strength of our diplomacy."-Barack Obama page 107.
This book is what I call a "coffee table book". Loaded with photos and enough information to serve as an introduction to Barack Obama. I recommend "Audacity of Hope" also.

This is a plus for all who have dreams not yet fulfilled. One of the best books I have ever purchased.

How To Play The Race Card August 19, 2008 7 out of 26 found this review helpful
The title to this book should be, "How to Win Voters and Influence the Media by Playing the Race Card". Obama has a sonorous voice and a million dollar smile. He can read from a teleprompter the speeches written by others. But for his expertise in playing the race card, he would still be a lecturer at the University of Chicago Law School. He is a de jure, but not a de facto American. He grew up in Hawaii and Indonesia. He neither knows nor shares American values. In their lust for the presidency, Democrats are willing to overlook these warning signs. Like the German industrialists in the 1930s who believed that they could control Hitler (another charismatic speaker and self-proclaimed messiah), the Democrats believe that they can control Obama. Like the German industrialists, they are wrong. Although Obama is bi-racial, he has chosen to allign himself with the Black Establishment. He will protect their interests at the expense of everyone else. Democratic voters are a lost cause. But independent voters should read this book in conjunction with Obama Nation and The Case Against Barack Obama. Weigh the evidence. Then decide whether whether to vote for him and his wife. Are independent voters willing to assume the risk of electing as President a man who, like Hitler, refuses to articulate the details of the "change" that he promises to bring to America?
