Editorial Reviews:

Product Description

“The excellent work of Peter Northouse invites teachers to grow along with students in research-based knowledge of leadership theory and practice. Peter’s book leads in and of itself!”
-Taggart E. Smith, Purdue University

Heartened by the positive response to previous editions of Leadership: Theory and Practice, this Fourth Edition is written with the same objective to bridge the gap between the often simplistic popular approaches to leadership and the more abstract theoretical approaches.

In addition to the new two color-layout, the Fourth Edition also:

  • Examines the latest research on culture, the dimensions of culture, and how culture affects the leadership process in a new chapter titled “Culture and Leadership”.
  • Takes a closer look at styles of female and male leaders, the causes for the “glass ceiling,” and how the glass ceiling is being broken in organizational settings in a newly written “Women and Leadership” chapter.
  • Includes new real-world case studies, research references, new figures and tables, additional research-based applications, and expanded discussions of selected leadership topics.
  • Provides Instructor Resources on CD with PowerPoint slides, a test bank, writing assignments, chapter reviews, and much more. (Place your order with SAGE customer service)

Praise for this Edition:

“The book presents basic concepts, research, and applications that are foundational to the study of leadership.”
-Leila Gonzalez-Sullivan, North Carolina State University

“I have used this text with both graduate and undergraduate students. I recommend it highly!”
-
Dr. Karl Strandberg, California State University, Dominguez Hills

"This book is a major source of insights and perspectives for all those studying on leadership courses in both the business and education sectors. It is also an excellent source for school leaders and educators who want to go deepen their understanding of leadership. After reviewing leadership books for over twenty years this book is by far one of the best I have come across."
-INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF EDUCATIONAL MANAGEMENT

“Northouse has given a gift to leadership professors and students by compiling this concise, insightful, critical, and user-friendly exploration of the somewhat bewildering and confusing literature on leadership theory.”
-Robert E. (Bob) Colvin, Christopher Newport University

"Leadership: Theory and Practice provides excellent analyses of a number of leadership theories and research findings in considerable detail...The book succeeds in advancing our understanding of the different approaches to leadership and the methods by which it can be practiced more effectively."
-
Ravindra Nath Saxena, ASCI JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT

“The additions to the Fourth Edition are excellent, especially the new section on ‘Culture and Leadership’ and the updated chapter on ‘Women and Leadership.’”
-Gill Robinson Hickman, University of Richmond

“Northouse skillfully presents both thorough and up-to-date theory on leadership in this Fourth Edition. The new leadership chapter addressing the topic of culture is especially informative for our increasingly global classroom discussions. His ability to provide great application-based cases helps this leadership theory come alive. Northouse continues to be a scholar, as well as a student, of current leadership knowledge.”
-Mary F. Sully de Luque, Thunderbird, The Garvin School of International Management

“This book offers a full coverage of contemporary notions of leadership, including traditional theories, salient models, and new domains. The chapters on women in leadership, culture, and team leadership are welcomed additions. The sophisticated but readable style and the inclusion of superb case material make this book a valuable resource for both entry-level and advance leadership courses.”
-Linda L. Putnam, Texas A&M University

"Excellent, well-written, and very practical. A must for all Organizational Leadership classes."
-Dr. Kenneth Arndt, Argosy University

3 out of 5 stars Much stronger on Theory than actual Practice.   August 16, 2001
18 out of 27 found this review helpful

Despite its subtitle, "Leadership: Theory & Practice" emphasizes the former much more than the latter. Scholars of leadership looking for theoretical exegeses & interpretive typologies may find what they're seeking in Northouse's analysis. Leadership practitioners (or high school educators, like me) may find less useful grist for their mills here. I appreciated many of the instruments Northouse cites here for assessing different aspects of leadership. But I found little spark here to distinguish "Leadership" from the quotidian genre of introductory college textbooks.

5 out of 5 stars Finally! A user-friendly theory book   July 7, 2001
11 out of 12 found this review helpful

For those seeking a crisp, clearly written book summarizing all the major leadership theories without being numbed into sleep, this book is it. Beginning with trait approaches, Northouse covers all the major leadership theories--style, situational, contingency, path-goal, leader-member, transformational, team, psychodynamics, gender, and ethics. Northouse clearly explains each theory, discusses the strengths and weaknesses of each, and provides case studies and samples of each leadership instrument. Although slightly more simplistic than other leadership texts, references are provided to allow readers to explore each theory in greater depth.

1 out of 5 stars Crtical Evaluation of LEADERSHIP   April 11, 2002
6 out of 18 found this review helpful

The author fails to recognize the relation of leaders to the structure of society (persons, families and bureaucracies) as well as all the general roles played within families (leader, manager, entrepreneur and apprentice). Leaders along with members of their families play all these roles with varying degrees of responsibility. While he does recognize that leaders exercise power, he goes on to highlite coercion which is only one and the least used of three tools of power and fails to identify the foundation of power. Finally his subtopics lack
logic and his case studies are exercises in management and not leadership. This introduction to leadership has a very limited scope without an apparent logic.

5 out of 5 stars A High Quality Book   October 2, 2007
5 out of 6 found this review helpful

According to Kurt Lewin, "There is nothing as practical as a good theory". This is an apt comment in reference to Peter Northouse's book "Leadership: Theory and Practice". The author methodically and clearly explained the major theories and concepts of leadership in a readable and easily understandable manner, in a way that readers can easily implement them.

Northouse stresses the need to link leadership with ethics and values and how to apply the leadership concepts and approaches in practical real-life situations in organisations. When leadership theory and concepts are spelled out as clearly and cogently as they are in this book, their application in organisations becomes self-evident. The author does a good job of presenting the leadership process in an easy to read and understand manner that is both useful and practical to all those that are interested in running successful and effective organisations. Novices will be provided a path whilst the seasoned practitioners will find affirmation.

5 out of 5 stars For practical use by any aspiring or practicing leader   March 4, 2004
4 out of 5 found this review helpful

Now in its third edition, Leadership Theory And Practice by Peter G. Northouse (Professor of Communication, Western Michigan University) examines the foremost leadership theories with particular attention as to how each approach can be directly applied to real-world situations and organizations. Exploring basic approaches (as well as theories such as the Contingency Theory, Path-Goal Theory, Leader-Member Exchange Theory), and then expanding beyond methodology to scrutinize such topics as leadership ethics and the barriers unique to women in (or who are seeking) leadership positions, Leadership Theory And Practice is very highly recommended -- whether for both academic study concerning leadership behavior and concrete, or for practical use by any aspiring or practicing leader in the business community today.
