Born again for the last time August 8, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
During Civil War, Marvel brought back one of their long-dead characters that has actually managed to stay dead in Mar-Vell, AKA Captain Marvel. Now, Captain Marvel: Secret Invasion picks up with this time-displaced Mar-Vell trying to find a new niche for himself in the post-Civil War universe, which also works as a prelude of sorts for Secret Invasion. Writer Brian Reed (Ms. Marvel, New Avengers: Illuminati) moves things along nicely, telling a very compelling story that details Mar-Vell's new destiny without making his return from the dead feel overly cheap. Reed manages to inject some nice ideas (including a church that worships Mar-Vell as a god) as Mar-Vell encounters Tony "Iron Man" Stark, Ms. Marvel, and takes on the Thunderbolts as well. Lee Weeks (Incredible Hulk, Daredevil) provides some great pencil work throughout this hardcover collection, which while it does lose some steam as it winds up, leaves an impression on Captain Marvel fans, and sets the stage for cataclysmic events to come. All in all, Captain Marvel: Secret Invasion works well as a Mar-Vell story and as a prelude to Secret Invasion, and in either case is definitely worth checking out.
Excellent Return September 2, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Secret Invasion plot thickens with the return of Captain Marvel! The last book I bought with the Kree warrior was Jim Starlin's "The Death of Captain Marvel" which was one of Marvel Comics' earliest attempts at graphic novels back in the 80s. Curiousity was really the reason I got this. What would they do with a post Silver age hero like CM? Would they botch it or ? I wasn't too worried as Brian Reed had handled the New Avengers: Illuminati - which was seriously good stuff.
As Marvel comics proves - old heroes never die, they just get resurrected and redirected. In this case, Brian Reed and Lee Weeks have done a marvel-ous job in handling one of the line's more complex superheroes, without losing the plot or integrity of the core character. The world has changed, but Marvel remains a tortured hero in search of answers. Throw in shades of the X-files and the Da Vinci Code, and we have an inspired return that will tickle most readers green...
This book will probably work best of course if you know who the original Captain Marvel was. Those new to the character may need to do past research before fully appreciating the story. Well plotted!
