5 out of 5 stars More Southfork shenanigans and Ewing Oil skulduggery in the much-loved legendary saga.   September 24, 2008
14 out of 15 found this review helpful

The worldwide mega-hit drama that dominated the 80s returns with the wheelings and dealings of those entertaining and feuding oil-rich Texans in this Season 10 DVD of all the action from Southfork and Ewing Oil. DALLAS returns to its original formula of focusing on the charismatic Ewing family, their in-fighting and J.R.'s scheming. This dramatically vibrant season won the People's Choice Award for Favorite Night Time Dramatic Serial in 1987 and its quality scripts, tightly woven plots and imaginative storylines breathe new life into the show.

Larry Hagman puts on his famous Texan Stetson for another great performance as that lovable villain J.R. Ewing who this season engineers one of his biggest and sneakiest schemes in a plot to blow up rival Arabian oil fields and stirs up a hornets' nest of trouble. The Emmy-winning and legendary Barbara Bel Geddes, who is honored at the American Theatre Hall of Fame for her outstanding contributions to American theatre, displays her great talent as an actress when Wes Parmalee's shock Jock revelation causes Miss Ellie to battle with her family and her conscience. Linda Gray wonderfully portrays a fun and conniving Sue Ellen who sets up sultry Mandy (former Miss USA Deborah Shelton) as her company's sexy lingerie model in a revenge scheme against J.R. Patrick Duffy and Victoria Principal are reunited for their winning portrayal of the 80s supercouple Bobby and Pam who finally remarry after being apart for so long. In an episode written by cast member Susan Howard Chrane (Donna Krebbs), J.R.'s venom level rises against Cliff which sets another sneaky J.R. scheme in motion.

This is a fun and funny season with many humorous lines including some between J.R. and Sue Ellen! Ken Kercheval splendidly plays Cliff Barnes in a light-hearted style throughout this season which makes Cliff more interesting and amusing. Texas-born movie veteran Steve Forrest gives a convincing performance as Wes Parmalee in a storyline involving mystery, scandal and intrigue. Victoria Principal and Ken Kercheval both display their good acting skills in some strong and entertaining scenes together. Former model Sheree J. Wilson is good as the show's new scheming and money-hungry bitch April Stevens. This season's final episode - with the spectacular end-of-season cliffhanger of Pam's explosive exit - is Victoria Principal's, Susan Howard's and Deborah Shelton's last appearances on the show. The legend that is Larry Hagman won the Soap Opera Digest Awards for Outstanding Prime Time Lead Actor and for Outstanding Prime Time Villain during this season. This is a tightly-written and taut season and it also has many comic moments and some shocking ones too.

This tenth season is produced by DALLAS veteran David Paulsen (Writer, Director & Story Editor of DVD Seasons 6, 7 & 8) and is well-plotted and well-executed and it also smashed its competition of the new hit MIAMI VICE in the Nielsen's ratings every week for the whole 1986-87 season which demonstrated the success and strength of this Season 10.

Next on DALLAS in the Season 11 DVD packed with devious intrigue has a nastier and meaner J.R. Ewing who is up to his evil schemes and sinister plotting to exact his ultimate revenge on Weststar. There are 4 seasons left to be released on DVD of the world's most-famous soap opera.

5 out of 5 stars One of My Favorites   September 21, 2008

This is one of my absolute favorite seasons of the show. To me actually, this is where the real show begins-I'm a tremendous fan of the later years and these are the releases I have really been waiting for. With Patrick Duffy back, and Dack Rambo in the main title, and also starring Steve Forrest, Deborah Shelton, Jenilee Harrison, and Sheree J Wilson, this season is of course infamous for returning the show to "reality" by making the last year a dream. However, with Leonard Katzman and David Paulsen back in charge of the show, the real Dallas came back after the disappointing and weak year without Bobby. There is excitement, intrigue related to the oil business, bad behavior, reunions and breakups that had been waiting to happen, and huge epic events for the show as a whole. Just in general it is the show at it's best, with yet another classic cliffhanger.

5 out of 5 stars One of DALLAS' best seasons.   September 18, 2008
6 out of 6 found this review helpful

This season is vintage DALLAS and a lot of fun. There's excitement with the Ewings and dastardly doings where JR is concerned who is up to his old tricks. I like how there's also a lot of action and dramatic scenes in this year of the show.

In this season of high drama, more feuding and intriguing intrigue, JR's keeping a big scheme under his hat which comes back to haunt him and results in a big loss for our anti-hero, which after years of blackmailing, scheming and cheating, is an inevitable loss. There's a sense of Karma as at the beginning of the season a disgruntled employee blows up a Ewing oilfield whose death results from commiting suicide, yet it's his own wife who is instrumental in causing the death of Ewing Oil after JR himself does exactly the same by planning to blow up Saudi oilfields that brings about the death of his company, as payback for the death of Mrs Scottfield's husband.

It's nice seeing Bobby and Pam back together again as well as their wedding. Composer John Parker's "The Only Lovers" (Bobby & Pam's Love Theme) makes a return and can be heard during Pam's wedding shower. Also, musical star Howard Keel demonstrates his marvelous baritone voice when Clayton sings Miss Ellie a few lines of "Don't Get Around Much Anymore"! There's a great scene where a furious Clayton violently confronts JR - "You bastard! I swear to god I'll kill you!", roars Clayton at JR. I do like the Wes Parmalee/Jock storyline - is he Jock or not? Larry Hagman's son Preston is in one scene where he is giving April a massage when Cliff visits who tells a semi-nude April: "Don't get up!"

Linda Gray is great this season too as Sue Ellen gives up the booze for good and seeks revenge on JR and his mistress. Sue Ellen does get on JR's nerves and in one scene JR tells Sue Ellen, "I liked you better when you were falling down drunk!" Linda Gray is on record as stating that her Valentine lingerie story-line this season is one of her two favorite Sue Ellen story-lines of the whole series.

William Smithers is back playing Weststar boss Jeremy Wendell as the cold and no-nonsense business rival of the Ewings who gets double-crossed by JR using vixen April but Wendell doesn't get mad - he gets even! A classic scene I like is the showdown between JR and Jeremy Wendell in the final episode when Wendell is about to take down Jock's portrait at the Ewing Oil offices - "Wendell, you touch that painting and I'll kill you where you stand.", JR angrily threatens.

There are hardly any wasted or unnecessary scenes as almost every scene has been well thought-out and moves the story-line along. In fact I like how plots are intertwined and JR's desire to find a solution to the oil crisis in the first episode causes a ripple effect throughout the whole season which culminates with the death of Ewing Oil.

Episodes are written by Leonard Katzman, David Paulsen, Calvin Clements Jr., Leah Markus, Mitchell Wayne Katzman and Susan Howard Chrane [a.k.a. Donna Krebbs] using her married name. Episodes are directed by Leonard Katzman, David Paulsen, Michael Preece, Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy, Linda Gray and Steve Kanaly. Episode Music Scores by Jerrold Immel, Lance Rubin, Richard Lewis Warren, John Parker and Angela Morley.

The 29 episodes this season come on three double-sided discs with five episodes on each side.

This is one of my favorite seasons of DALLAS and for me is the last best season the show had. Although the final three seasons are not without their faults, I do like the remaining seasons too which have some good drama at times such as the fabulous Range War with all the firepower and shootings at Southfork when George Kennedy joins the show, JR blackmailing whoever gets in his way to get Weststar, the Weststar/Ewing Oil tanker collision, JR cruelly trying to get rid of his wife Cally, the story-line with Barbara Eden as LeeAnn attempting to ruin JR with Michelle's help, Vampish Michelle causing a lot of trouble for JR, plus some other good story-lines.

Dallas is the greatest drama series, I have ever watched. I am glad that Season 10 is coming on January 13, 2009. This season is the last one for Donna Krebbs and Pamela Barnes Ewing. I hope Warner Bros. has plans for the 4 remaining seasons, in the near future. Please release them on DVD, after Season 10! I would LOVE to see all the storylines, of Dallas released on DVD.
