Released amidst rumors of romance between costars Angelina Jolie and soon-to-be-divorced Brad Pitt, Mr. and Mrs. Smith offers automatic weapons and high explosives as the cure for marital boredom. The premise of this exhausting action-comedy (no relation to the 1941 Alfred Hitchcock comedy starring Carole Lombard and Robert Montgomery) is that the unhappily married Smiths (Pitt and Jolie) will improve their relationship once they discover their mutually-hidden identities as world-class assassins, but things get complicated when their secret-agency bosses order them to rub each other out. There's plenty of amusing banter in the otherwise disposable screenplay by Simon Kinberg (xXx: State of the Union, Fantastic Four), and director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) gives Pitt and Jolie a slick, glossy superstar showcase that's innocuous but certainly never boring. It could've been better, but as an action-packed summer confection, Mr. and Mrs. Smith kills two hours in high style. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars "Working through some domestic issues"   June 10, 2005
209 out of 266 found this review helpful

Do you want to watch a movie that makes you think?. Go watch another movie, it is as simple as that. But if you simply want to have some fun, give "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" a try.

The film starts with a bored couple that goes to a marriage counselor in order to do something to save their marriage. They seem a couple like many others, so immersed in their routine that they hardly pay attention to each other. John Smith (Brad Pitt) is an architect, Jane Smith (Angelina Jolie) works with computers. They have dinner at seven o'clock everyday, and don't talk too much.

But... not all is at it seems in their apparently ordinary lives. As a matter of fact, both are assassins working for rival companies. Neither Jane nor John knows about the extracurricular activities of their other half, despite the fact that they have been married for six years. But soon enough they will find out, as both are assigned the same target, "The tank" (an adorable Adam Brody). Will things get worse before they get better?. Can we expect to enter into a combat zone when the Smiths start to solve their domestic issues?. And will we enjoy it?. See the movie, and find out!.

What more can I say about "Mr. & Mrs. Smith", so you have more elements to decide whether you will watch it?. Let's see... To start with, this movie has lots of action (guns, knives and bombs included), so if you don't like action movies I don't advice you to choose it. Also, there is sharp dialogue that is surprisingly funny sometimes, mostly when the Smiths are bickering (thank you, Simon Kinberg, for the screenplay). What is more, you can always enjoy Brad and Angelina's on-screen chemistry, that is really outstandingly good.

On the other hand, I felt that the ending was somehow contrived, and that some kind of closure was missing. That is the reason why I will probably watch this film again when it is released in dvd, in the hope that the director (Doug Liman) decides to give us an alternate ending that makes more sense.

All in all, I really liked this movie. It is far from perfect, but quite enjoyable nonetheless, so I will give it 3.5 stars out of 5. For me, watching "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" was fun. You will probably enjoy it too, if you know what you are getting into when you get your ticket. That is, no profound thoughts, but good entertainment all the same. That was more than enough for me, in this case :)

4 out of 5 stars Old-fashion high class fluff   September 24, 2005

This movie reminded me of all the old black and white dance-and-banter movies I used to watch, with loads of style and deadpan wit, and a good coating of gloss. There isn't much substance-this isn't the sort of movie to go in depth- but there's some really surprisingly good acting. Brad Pitt is a down to earth, old fashioned skills sort of killer; Angelina Jolie is slick, high-strung, part of a big-money-and-loads of neat toys assasination outfit. They do a brilliant job. I really enjoyed it. There's an attention to detail in some aspects that my friend the gun enthusiast would get a kick out of. (Those yellow sunglasses actually have a purpose in top-level competitive shooting; they make your vision ever so slightly better.)

My husband and I - both former military - watched it in the theater with a bunch of teenagers, and I think we laughed so hard we embarased them. It's really a good movie, it works on the blow-em-up level as well as a slightly more sophisticated one.

1 out of 5 stars I Hate It When....   April 12, 2006

I HATE IT when studios call their Double Dip attempt an "Unrated" cut. If you are calling a movie unrated, it should be because you replaced things you cut that had to be cut to make a certain rating. If the rating didnt change, then you shouldnt use "Unrated". They are killing that term. It used to mean something, now it just means "Buy this other version for 4 more dollars".

4 out of 5 stars Superb Special Edition DVD Upgrade   May 30, 2006
59 out of 60 found this review helpful

Many people have been ripping this release apart without so much as a glance at the product itself. While the DVD may fall short of other recent Collector's Edition DVDs, such as the Alien films, this is a superb presentation, with some genuinely interesting Special Features.

What has sparked the most debate about this release is easily the "Unrated" cut itself. The film is largely the same, running only 6 minutes longer than the original cut. The added scenes are interesting - additional dialogue with the counsellor in the opening, a few extra dialogue sequences between Pitt and Jolie before they learn each others identities, and a handful of alternate takes for certain sequences. Perhaps the most notable - and most controversial - is the extended love scene halfway through the film. The scene is very steamy, but those expecting excessive raunch or skin from the gorgeous stars will be disappointed. This is a love scene, not a sex scene, and there is only the tiniest hint of skin from both actors, with Pitt (or Pitt's body double, as the shot in question is from the neck down) showing the most.

And far the the SPECIAL FEATURES go, the disc is very careful not to double-dip. It includes: (1) Deleted Scenes, including an alternate ending. None of the deleted scenes are repeated from the original reelase, and many are well worth a watch. (2) A feature-length commentary from director Doug Limon that, while informative, offers little insight not mentioned in the original release's commentaries. (3) Doug's Film School. This section is essentially a breakdown of abandonded concept and sequences that never made it on film. Of note is a lengthy alternate version of the Desert sequence, located at a snowy mountaintop and ending in a hand-to-hand battle between a masked Pitt and Jolie, as well as several animatics for various sequnces throughout the films. Also of note is the inclusion of the deleted "villain" sequences mentioned of the commentary of the first release's commentary. (4)Confidential Files. This is actually where the deleted scenes are located. Also included in the "file" is a 4-minute gag reel, and a hidden Easter Egg (another deleted scene). (5) Behind the scenes documentary. This 30-minutes featurette offers more insight than that of the original release, as well as a significat amount of B-Roll footage from several of the film's major set piees, including the in-house battle and the desert scene. (6) Photo Gallery. 2 dull on-screen scroll-through photo galleries.

While this reelase has met with much criticism, those who enjoyed the movie should be informed that this is one of the rare double-dips that doesn't FEEL like a double-dip. No features are repeated from the original release, and the unrated movie itself is different enough from the theatrical version that it is well worth owning both versions. Also, the picture is much clearer and less grainy, and the sound more crisp.

The disc also includes a DVD insert, with random facts about the film anda Chapter List (36 Chapters).

Grade: B+

5 out of 5 stars Marriage, Guns, and Two Irresistable Performances   June 11, 2005

This is the most fun I've had in theaters in a year. I had high expectations for this movie, but they were greatly exceeded.

First, Pitt and Jolie are great together. Both know how to control the screen on their own....together, they're unstoppable. Unless, that is, the script sucked. Luckily, the script is another one of the movie's strong points. The entire audience laughed pretty non-stop through the entire movie. There was just this infectious joy in the crowd that I've never encountered at any other movie, and this is largely due to the great writing and great acting. As a side note, Vince Vaughn also has a rather comical role that garners some of the laughs...he's a welcome addition.

That's not all, folks. While I wasn't expecting great action, it arrived regardless of my expectations. Spectacular explosions, well-choregraphed gunfights, car chases, and more were all provided with some very finely tuned cinematography. There were several moments where I just had to silently mouth "WOW".

Finally, the score keeps the pulse of the movie going. The movie could have had no music and kept me enthralled. However, with the score and the songs in the background, this movie truly was the roller-coaster ride of the year.

I went to the movie without reading any critical reviews and loved it. I got home and found that it was getting only mediocre reviews. What is wrong with critics? I went with 5 friends and everybody loved it....we all came out with big grins on our faces. See this in theaters! You won't regret it!
