Amazon.com Is firefighter and "heroic S.O.B." Tommy Gavin (Denis Leary) becoming, as one character so delicately puts it, "pussified?" As the fourth season begins, Tommy is listening to Dr. Laura and watching Oprah. He awkwardly and clumsily avoids the aggressive crazy-hot volunteer woman firefighter (Jennifer Esposito) who saved his life in the beach-house fire of which he has no memory; an act that has left him, shall we say, with a limp hose. In time, he will proclaim to be "back to the old me," but this season, he engages in behavior that would give even the old Tommy pause, and puts audience empathy for this deeply flawed character to the supreme test. In one of this season's most wrenching developments, Tommy and his estranged wife, Janet (Andrea Roth), are living together platonically to care for her new baby, whose paternity is in question. But, failing to bond with the infant, Janet sinks to the depths of post-partum depression, driving Tommy to think the unthinkable, and to do the unforgivable. Elsewhere, dim, but good-hearted Sean (Steven Pasquale) struggles to make a go of his rocky marriage to the unstable Maggie (Tatum O'Neal), Chief Jerry (Jack McGee) fails his post heart attack stress test and is relegated to a desk job, the firehouse makes a play for a new probie (Larenz Tate) who might change the basketball team's fortunes, and Tommy finds himself even further alienated from his rebellious and contemptuous daughter (Natalie Distler), who is living with a rock musician. Along with Esposito, Gina Gershon joins the ranks of series hotties as a bar pickup with some sexual kinks. But the one who really lights our fire is Amy Sedaris as the bipolar daughter of the new chief (Jerry Adler), who insists Tommy take her out. Rescue Me doesn't just tear the basic cable envelope, it incinerates it. Unlike other long-running shows, Rescue Me stays true to its gritty muse, with no attempt to make difficult characters more likeable. The edges remain sharp and the humor charred black (the series is not above--or beneath--cheap Anna Nicole Smith jokes in the wake of a shocking tragedy that rocks the firehouse). While perhaps not as consistent or compelling as previous seasons, No. 4 contains indelible moments, such as Tommy and Janet's visit to a marriage counselor, who, after hearing their tortured history, thinks he's being punk'd, and a Gavin family intervention ("We got enough drunks here to start our own AA meeting," Maggie observes). The bountiful bonus features, including nearly a half hour's worth of deleted scenes, a season overview and a featurette about real firefighters, add extra spark to this set. --Donald Liebenson
Product Description An arson investigation following the beach house fire targets Tommy, Janet worries that her new baby doesn't like her, Colleen runs away from home, a not guilty verdict is delivered in Uncle Teddy's manslaughter trial, Jerry commits suicide, the crew from 62 Truck is savaged in the press for not being able to save seven children from dying in a tragic fire - it's another season of challenge and turbulence for Tommy and the guys.

A bit uneven, but still a more than solid season March 31, 2008 28 out of 30 found this review helpful
Haunted firefighter Tommy Gavin (Denis Leary) knows about tragedy all too well. He doesn't quite remember what happened at the beach-house at the end of the previous season of FX's Rescue Me, but all he does know is that he is under investigation, while Sheila (Callie Thorne) picks up the pieces. To make things more hectic, Tommy and his estranged wife Janet (Andrea Roth) are taking care of the new baby, that may be Tommy's or may be his late brother's (Dean Winters). Tommy's concerns over the baby's safety come into question as well, which leads to a decision that could forever destroy any repairs made to his marriage with Janet. In the meantime, Chief Reilly (Jack McGee) gets worse news; Sean (Steven Pasquale) starts to grow a pair in regards to his new marriage to Maggie (Tatum O'Neal) and learns a big secret about Probie Mike (Michael Lombardi) in one of the series' funniest and shocking moments; Kenny's (John Scurti) relationship with an ex-nun takes a downward turn; Franco (Daniel Sunjata) has a big decision to make while trying to get back his daughter from Alicia (Susan Sarandon); Tommy's daughter Colleen (Natalie Distler) starts to rebel in a big way; and a new recruit (Larenz Tate) makes an impact on the group. While the drama and character development was high in the fourth season of Rescue Me, there was just something about this season that didn't feel all that compelling compared to what has been done on the series before. Also, there was a bit of an uneven feel with a number of already established characters (particularly Probie Mike), but despite the flaws, the fourth season of Rescue Me is still a more than solid season of the series. The season concludes on a bit of a down note, but seeds have been planted for some big time developments to come. All in all, Rescue Me continues to entertain and even impress, and here's hoping that there's more drama to come from Leary and company.
disappointing April 28, 2008 10 out of 18 found this review helpful
Now, I could tell that this show was going sour during season 3 by the first episode when his brother was sleeping with his ex-wife...However, I could stand season 3, but it was hard to by season 4!!!??? What in the hell went wrong? There were only a few laughs here with close-to-garbage story lines. They are trying to cram way too much B.S. into every episode, killing way too many characters off for no good reason. Nobody has an attractive personality (with the exception of one or two, and one of them were killed off this season)---TOMMY GAVIN is turning into such a Piece of "blank" it almost makes it unbearable..."Tommy, Tommy, Tommy"! everybody caters to Tommy. His sister is a complete waste of ink and if this keeps up the show is finished. Season 4 took such a drastic jump from seasons 1, 2 and (most of) 3 that there is no excuse. I will probably add this season to my collection with hope that season 5 will clean up it's act. VERY WEAK!
What happened? June 10, 2008 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
This season is humorless and Tommy Gavin is completley castrated. The "guy's guy" show has become a chick's soap opera with none of the humor or perspective of the first 2 seasons. The fire and anger is completely gone from this series, and even the sub-character's storylines are flat and go nowhere at all. I don't know what happened to Leary, but the first 2 seasons were epic television, the 3rd had it's moments, but the 4th season was not Rescue Me at all.
Awesome Series But Not The Best Season! April 24, 2008 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
Let me start by saying this is arguably the best drama I have ever seen. That being said, this season did not meet my expectations when compared to the first three seasons. Even so this DVD is a must have for any collection. The season starts just where last season ended, a fire at Shiela's house. There are a few tremendous ups and downs, but this season just didn't have that punch in the gut that the other three seasons have. Don't get me wrong, I loved every episode and 10 minutes after an episode, I couldn't wait to watch the next. Don't get me wrong, this season is great it is just that Leary and company set the bar so high in the previous seasons, it is almost impossible to achieve.
Leary just keeps on going.... April 29, 2008 3 out of 8 found this review helpful
I've watched all seasons, all episodes, multiple times, something I have not done with any other show, ever, period. I was watching really closely during season three and more so in season 4 for signs, any signs at all, that the show was going to take a dive, because it seemed impossible that a series could keep it up for so long. And with Rescue Me, what's UP is a long, long way compared to any other series. It is up there, out there, nothing really compares. I am biting my nails waiting for season five. So, does season 4 compare with the previous 3? Oh yeah! It is just as funny, it is just as raw, it is just as dramatic as the first three. each episode will involve you deeply and leave you craving the next and when the ending of the last episode sinks in, you will be howling with laughter at the absolute righteousness and yowling with disbelief that you have to wait for the next season to start to continue this journey through Leary's creativity which seems boundless.
