Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com
Between his high-octane debut, Bad Boys, and 1998's wannabe blockbuster Armageddon, hotshot director Michael Bay forged his dubious reputation with this crowd-pleasing action extravaganza. In it a psychotically disgruntled war hero (Ed Harris) seizes the island prison of Alcatraz and threatens to wage chemical warfare against nearby San Francisco unless the government publicly recognizes the men who were killed under Harris's top-secret command. Nicolas Cage plays the biochemist who teams up with the only man ever to have escaped from Alcatraz (Sean Connery) in an attempt to foil Harris's terrorist scheme. As one might expect, what follows is an action-packed barrage of bullets, bodies, and climactic confrontations, replete with enough plot contrivances to give even the most jaded action fan cause for alarm. It's a load of hooey, but the cast is obviously having a grand old time, and there's enough wit to make the recycled action sequences tolerable. If you're ordering this movie on Blu-ray, be careful with the volume knobs on your home-theater sound systems, because The Rock could cause partial hearing loss and structural damage to your home. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Great transfer to Blu-Ray!   January 14, 2008

More than likely, you already know whether you like this movie or not. The
question you may be asking is "If I own the DVD, is it worth upgrading to
the BD version?" I'm happy to report that this is a great transfer, and is
a major upgrade from the DVD version, assuming that you have a audio/video
system that can allow you to see and hear the difference. The picture is
far more detailed than the DVD version, and the uncompressed PCM audio
track is fantastic. Kudos to Disney for doing an excellent job on this one.
Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Non-stop action!   December 23, 2007

The Rock still stands, even after all these years, as one of my favorite films of all time. Sean Connery still dominates the screen, while Nicholas Cage plays the dim-witted genius who tries to save the day. The action scenes are mind blowing and the story is well thought out. I give it 5 out of 5 only because I can't give a 10 out of 5.

4 out of 5 stars Blu-ray Version of the Criterion Collection DVD   January 10, 2008

This is generally a port over of the Criterion Collection DVD release, with the film in 1080p high definition. Picture quality of the feature is a bit soft, but then again the movie is 11 years old. The included 5.1 Dolby Digital track is nice, the PCM 5.1 is probably better, but I do not have that ability on my system.

Special features are in 408i/p.

5 out of 5 stars Great Picture, Great Sound, Great Action Movie. Fun Flick!   January 18, 2008

This review may sound like my review of Con Air. I veiwed this disk on my 40" Sony XBR4 monitor. Calibrated with DVE High Def disk. And Monster HDMI cables. Sound system was a Sony 7.1 receiver with Bose Acoustamass speakers. Playstation 3 was used for playback. The transfer is beautiful. No artifacts or dirt. No scratches or edge enhancement. Colors were vivid, and rich. No dating at all. Sound was crisp and clear. Voices very clean. The explosions keep your sub-woofer awake. Overall my grade for picture would be an A. Remember, this movie wont measure up to Blade Runner, Close Encounters, or 2001 on picture quality. Though close. But not many do. It is great for the person who enjoys good old fashioned shoot em up flicks. If you want reality, try Saving Private Ryan or Black Hawk Down. Otherwise, sit back and enjoy.

As far as the movie itself goes. It's just fun to watch. Yes it's over the top. But it is fun. Great cast, interesting plot. Keeps going forword at full speed. great shoot outs, plenty of explosions. Certainly didn't win any Oscars, but who cares.

5 out of 5 stars An AMAZING Transfer!!   January 15, 2008

I loved this movie since it came out. We ordered the Blu-Ray version and it was like watching crystal. It was so sharp. Out of the 30+ discs I own, Cars and the Rock are the best in picture so far. I hope they do the same for Armageddon when it comes out.
