Pull up a seat in the Peanut Gallery and enjoy some classic episodes of The Howdy Doody Show. This DVD contains a special one-hour takeoff on This Is Your Life, whose original broadcast on December 28, 1957, marked the 10th anniversary of the show featuring the freckled marionette Howdy Doody and its buckskin-clad MC, Buffalo Bob Smith. The anniversary program will serve as a great introduction to The Howdy Doody Show for those too young to recall when Howdy and Buffalo Bob were among the biggest stars on television. Those who did tune in way back when will be delighted by a parade of marionettes featuring all of Doodyville's characters. Also on the disc are three other episodes, one of which chronicles Howdy and his friends trying to form a bird-watching club, a noble effort nearly foiled by Doodyville's resident grump, Phineas T. Bluster. The shows were broadcast in glorious black and white, and the production values are rudimentary by today's standards, but the visible strings on the puppets only add to the charm. The programs even contain original commercials, and no one could extol the virtues of Hostess Twinkies like Buffalo Bob. --Robert J. McNamara

Description
The Bird Club (February 1, 1958) - Buffalo Bob invites Professor Whipporill to speak at a meeting of the Doodyville Bird Club. The Professor brings along a pet woodpecker, which Mr. Bluster uses to break up the meeting. "10th Anniversary" (December 28, 1957) - Howdy's 10th Anniversary on TV is celebrated with a birthday party. The show's theme is based on the program "This Is Your Life." "Shrinking Machine" (February 8, 1958) - Hoping to shed a few pounds, Buffalo Bob uses Howdy Doody's new shrinking machine. But, due to Mr. Bluster and his mean cohort Pesky the Clown's trickery, Buffalo Bob shrinks down to the size of Tom Thumb! "Tammy Returns" (March 8, 1958) - Clarabell and the grand prize winner of the Smile Contest--Tammy Marihugh of Hollywood, California--return from their tour. Buffalo Bob gets ready to present Tammy with her prizes, but he finds that they have disappeared.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL SHOWS...   June 28, 2001

It's great to have these shows available-the 10th anniversary show must be the same one that Buffalo Bob took with him during his campus appearances. I loved the "Beautiful Smile" contest for children during several of the episodes-one of the prizes was an outboard motor! Priceless.
