Actor and martial arts maestro Jet Li and iconoclastic director Tsui Hark revisit historical China and legendary folk hero Wong Fei Hung in the second installment to the wildly popular Once Upon a Time in China film series (or better yet, "serials"). The main players include Li as Wong Fei Hung, Rosamund Kwan as his beloved but Westernized Auntie 13, and their clumsy sidekick Foon (Max Mok). China is in a period of political unrest. Dr. Sun Yat Sen is beginning to gain momentum behind his Nationalist party. A Qing minister (played with intensity by skilled fighter Donnie Yen) firmly carries out his job as police enforcer and a crazed cult called the White Lotus Sect has decided to take matters into their own hands by bullying citizens and destroying everything foreign. Wong and his crew find themselves at odds with the minister and the Sect, who have more in common than they initially let on. It all leads to some high-octane action scenes, including an all-out table-stacking and airborne brawl with the Sect (in which Wong uncharacteristically goes a little berserk himself) and a one-on-one matchup between Li and Yen. Tsui juggles the multilayered plot while Li juggles his opponents in a perfectly serviceable epic that is perhaps not as significant as the first Once Upon a Time in China but is solid kung fu nourishment for fans. --Shannon Gee

3 out of 5 stars Nothing Special Weak on the Action !!!   June 5, 2001

I know that this movie seems great to all the people who are reading these reviews, but trust me, this dvd is not worth it. The action scenes weren't that great. The plot was a little weak. The guy who played Foon didn't fight well. Don't get me wrong, I loooovvvveeeeeeee Yuen Woo-Ping movies. I lovvvvvvveeeeeeeeee Donnie Yen and Jet Li. I expected this to be a non-stop action ride. But in fact, it was greatly lacking all of the above. Yuen Woo-Ping has done some of the greatest fight sequences I have ever seen. But something happened here because nothing was original or unique. It was plain and boring. Don't get me wrong, I've seen Tai-chi master, Wing Chun, Deadly China Hero, Legend of the Drunken Master, Iron Monkey, Fist of Legend, etc, and thought they were the best movies i have ever seen for Kung-Fu. I thought Ouatic 1 was also original and moving. The way Tsui Hark directed the last fighting scene and all the rest was amazing. In this movie you had to wait for 3/4 of the movie to finally see some serious action. Crouching Tiger's action was much better and even more unique. In fact, in Hong Kong and Mainland China they criticized Crouching Tiger as being boring and having no action, while Ouatic 2 was a classic there and had absolutely no action or plot. I know the other reviews sound appealing and I stick out like a sour apple, but please try to understand. I love Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Donnie Yen, etc, but this movie was a big disappointment. I watched this in great pain. How could this movie be so ordinary and medicro. I, like you, read the reviews and said to myself, hey this movie is going to be great. I even saw a trailor of Donnie Yen and Jet Li fighting with bows in a enclosed area and said out loud, this is going to be a great movie. I will say this, the action between Donnie Yen and Jet Li was amazing but that amazing part only lasted 10 minutes. Jet Li never fights hand to hand with Donnie Yen. Donnie Yen doesn't fight at all with his hands. Please put this DVD away. Trust me, writing this review hurts me more than it hurts the people who are reading this. I'm a great admirer of Yuen, Donnie and Jet and even . Tsui Hark. But this movie didn't do it for me. (....)

5 out of 5 stars Now THIS is a kung fu DVD to get!   June 10, 2001

I think that this is a must-buy DVD for fans of martial arts films from Hong Kong. This movie delivers, and this DVD also delivers.

First, the DVD. It's great. A lot of people have complained about Hong Kong movie DVDs, and rightly so, but this one delivers the goods. First, the video transfer is VERY good. Usually, they do NOT look this good. The print is sharp and relatively clean. There's an artifact or two on occasion, but by and large, it's a very nice transfer. Much better than a lot of other movies, especially for its age (1992).

The sound is also very good. I noticed that it was in Dolby Digital 5.1 and there was actually some use of the surround channels. Not like some of those other DVDs in Dolby 2.0 or mono!

For the langauges, you get the English dub AND a Cantonese soundtrack with English subtitles. Remember those Jet Li DVDs with only a dub? Well this one isn't like that! And another benefit is that the subtitles are presented extremely well. They are in yellow and in the black bar at the bottom of the screen (it fits since it's 2.35:1). The letters are easy to read since they are large enough, it is a clear sub without spelling errors, and the titles don't move too fast that you can't read them. I've had some really bad experiences with some HK subtitles, but rest assured, this one is good.

So the DVD is of high quality, no question about it. But how's the movie? It's also very good! I've seen my share of HK movies, and this one was definitely one of the better ones. There's some very cool action. A mix of wire and non-wire. Jet Li is great and so is Donnie Yen. It may not be wall-to-wall action, but I felt there was enough and what you do get is really good. Oh, and the film's soundtrack is also good, clearly above average. Heck, even the plot isn't that bad. This movie as a whole certainly blows Part III of this series out of the water.

I'm very happy with this.

This is now my favorite movie of all time, period. That includes all American movies as well so you know this movie must be pretty good considering I am an American who only speaks ENGLISH.This flick is done right,Jet Li and Yen are amazingly quick together in thier stick brawling scenes, and it is truly a pleasure to watch. But what added a great sense of suspense to the movie was the White Lotus cult, these guys are nuts,if you see the first scene then youll know what I mean, especailly when the two guys eat the sticks on fire(close up and all) and their priest deflects sword attacks and gets kicked in the nuts viciously by his students to demonstrate invincibility(but of course not to Wong Fei Hung). There was also alot of violence and the cults songs are almost hypnotizing ,especially the blind man's,I CANT GET THEM OUT OF MY HEAD!YOU MUST OWN THIS MOVIE KUNGFU FAN OR NOT.

5 out of 5 stars The best in the series...   February 20, 2000

Director Tsui Hark continues his tale of Wong Fei Hong in Once upon a time in China II (1992). Starring Jet Li as Master Wong, Rosamund Kwan as Aunt Yee, Mok Siu-chong ('Fire Dragon') replacing Yuen Biao as Foon, and Donnie Yen ('Wing Chun') as a Ching minister. This film delivers the goods. Wong travels to Canton where he meets nationalist Dr. Sun Yat Sen, a revolutionary during the last days of the Ching Dynasty. Together, they go up against the govt and the anti-western "White Lotus Cult". Non-stop action. Jet Li is particuliarly good in two scenes against the cult followers and leader. Lots of great wire work. Plus the anticipated Donnie Yen match-up does not disappoint. Donnie Yen rules! The film gives good insight into this period of Chinese history. A very troubled time, with groups from all sides trying to take over China. Aunt Yee continues her quest to gain the favor of Fei Hong, setting up some humorous scenes. Good plot, all-star cast, first class action... Jet Li's greatest role. You've got to buy this, it is awesome!

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking martial arts fighting scenes   January 13, 2000

The sequal to the hit Once Upon A Time in China takes off with Wong Master (Jet Li) taking a vacation with a couple of his best students. Right form the beginning of the movie Wong Master's martial art prowess is displayed. In this beginning scene he encounters a "White Lotus" sect whose aggressive ways in dealing with foreign affairs lead to too much killing. The fight that is created between Wong (Jet Li) and the White Lotus sect displays an internal fight with one's own countrymen. The fight scenes in this sequal are original and high intensity. A very imortant message slips through all the perfectly coreographed action scenes. Even the opposition may be evil and underhanded, violence is only a short-term solution. A nice touch to the movie is the romantic stirring between Wong Master and very distant Aunt with no blood relation. It's not as sick as it sounds... Definitely a must have.
