Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
This classic of ethnography describes Maori tattooing (moko), which communicates the bearer's genealogy, tribal affiliation, and spirituality. This definitive study relates how moko first became known to Europeans and discusses the distinctions between men and women's moko, patterns and designs, and moko in legend and song. Features 180 black-and-white illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!   February 14, 2007
3 out of 4 found this review helpful

I've read a lot about Maori tattooing, and this book is very informative and interesting. I strongly reccommend it for educational or personal research.

5 out of 5 stars Maori Magnifico   February 26, 2008
Absolutely a great find. I'm glad I grabbed this one. It has a lot of relevance to todays tatooes.

5 out of 5 stars A morbid curiosity.   May 12, 2008
This was originally published in 1896, sixty plus years after the initial dying out of Maori tattooing. Any published information was quite thin for Robley's research, information gleaned from the experiences of European captives of the headhunting tribes, and missionary priests. But this editorializing of available accounts makes great use of Robley's own sketching abilities to recreate scenes and present a showcase of decorative heads (war and profiteer bounty) then found in various institutions, and even numerous examples from his own macabre collection.
