2 out of 5 stars Check all books carefully   November 5, 2006

My problem was that these books were missing chunks of pages! We didn't notice it until book 4 of 6, but 80+ pages were gone! Now, Amazon was great about replacing the set adn paying for me to return the messed-up set. This is just a warning to check your boxed set when it gets in for missing chunks of pages!

Of course, the Harry Potter series is great, adn we love having them in paperback.

The Harry Potter series is a great series because the author explains the characters so well. The plot is full of adventure. I like the 1st book Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone because it is when Harry finds out he is a wizard, he first goes to Hogwarts, he meets friends, and gets foes.
I like the 2nd book Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets because Dobby comes and tells him not to go back to Hogwarts, he goes to school anyway, and a lot of weird things happen (I can not tell you though).
I like the third book Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban because he goes on the night bus and has a crazy ride, Aunt Marge starts saying bad things about him, he gets mad, and he finds out that Sirius Black got away from Azkaban.
I like the 4th book Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire because there is a tournament between 3 schools that Harry some how gets entered in to and he has to do the things in the tournament.
I like the 5th book Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix because they make an order to fight dark wizards, Harry and Cho get into a relationship, and he has a court trial for using under-aged magic.
I like the 6th book Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince because Harry gets picked up early by Dumbledore and helps him make an old teacher come back.
My favorite book in the series is the 5th book. My favorite character is Harry Potter.
The series themes are life as a wizard and good versus evil. I recommend this series for all ages. I think this is the best series ever!

3 out of 5 stars AWESOME PRICE!!!   September 10, 2006

First, the 3 stars are not about the novels, but this particular edition.

6 books for $32 is just unbeatable. If you haven't read the books, and money is an issue, you should definetly buy this set. But beware, there's a reason for the price: the paper and covers are of very low quality, hence the 3 stars. So if you're picky about books being in a nice format and quality paper then go hardcover (at 3 times the price).

Now, about the novels. I had not read any of the books until a month ago, since I was under the impression of them being for childs (which, judging by the style, the first two are), but someone lend me one, and I got so intrested, that I bought the set, and read them all in a week (I did pretty much nothing but reading that week), so you probably get my point. Although Rowling lacks many of the characteristics and erudition of the great contemporary writers, she is a great narrator indeed.

There's also a thing that bothers me: the localization of the books. I mean, if the books were written by a foreigner person, with foreign characters, then why should the editors force them to speak american. I know it's just a couple of details here and there, but still; it's not like we wouldn't be able to understand it otherwise, and it prevents readers, specially young ones, to learn a couple of facts about how people talk in other countries.

1 out of 5 stars Harry Potter Papaerback Box Set   July 3, 2007

Actually very dissapointed to find out that the books were a cheap copy of the original .. both graphics on the front cover .. the quality of the paper and type .. everything about them was cheap and I wish I'd never bought them. I would have preferred to buy them individually .. nowhere in the comments or details did it say it was a poor quality substitute so I feel I've been extremly missled

5 out of 5 stars Share the magic :)   February 4, 2007

This boxed set allows you to buy the first six paperbooks in the Harry Potter series at a very reasonable price. I think buying it is a good idea for:

a- those who want to give their kids/friends (or even themselves) a great gift at a very good price --> due to the fact that you will give 6 books at the price that some bookstores sell just 1.

b- those who are very lazy --> because it is almost certain that if you buy the first book for yourself or your children, you will end up at the same bookstore buying the other books in the series. Buying the first 6 books at the same time will save you time and money, and you will only have to return later to buy book number 7, to be released on July 2007.

c- those who want to read a book that their kids will love, but that they will like to, and turn the fact that they are reading the series into a family experience.

d- those who want to motivate their children to read --> because reading Harry Potter will make them understand that there are books can offer them some things that the television cannot. If your children just hate the idea of reading, show them one of the movies based on the series, and afterwards tell them that the books have a lot to do with them, but that they are way better.

e- those who are learning English, and want to practise it in a entertaining way. And what better way to improve your grammar that reading something that is actually fun?.

f- those who aren't from an English speaking country, already have the books but want to read them in the language Rowlings wrote them --> because the reading experience is totally different (and yes, I know because I read some of the books both in Spanish, Italian and English).

g- those who are curious about the series but haven't given it a try --> because this series really grows on you, and it gets better and better, specially after book number 3.

After telling you about all the reasons why buying this boxset is a good idea, I would like to talk a little more about point g- because that was my case some years ago, even though I wasn't lucky enough to get my hands on a boxed set. First, though, I would like to comment upon the fact that I know some people that haven't liked the first book, and that have given up after a few chapters. I don't know anybody that has given up after reading the first 3 books. Yes, the first 2 books are very simple and short, but they help to set up the parallel world J.K. Rowlings is writing about. The 3rd book already shows a great promise of how the series are going to be like.

In my case, I bought the first 4 books at the same time, a Saturday afternoon. I read the first 2 books ("Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" and "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets") rather quickly, and wondered why everybody including my sister loved them so much. They weren't long, and they were rather good, but nothing out of the ordinary. It is only while I was reading the 3rd book ("Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban"), that very same night, that I understood what the hype was all about. Even though when I finished it it was high time to go to bed, I couldn't help but starting the 4th book ("Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire"), even though I was tired, and it really was much bigger than the others. It also was much more entertaining, and noticeably more complicated. Understandably (for those who have read these books, at least), I started reading it and couldn't stop until Sunday's afternoon. I was tired, but very happy of having discovered the magic, something I wouldn't have done if I had stopped after reading the first two books...

From that point onwards, I'm a "pottermaniac". I've read all the books in the series, and I thoroughly enjoy them. Yes, I like other kinds of books too, and I'm an adult with a degree in Political Science, but that doesn't mean that I cannot find these books engaging. One of the wonderful things about the Harry Potter series is that very different people can like it, for very diverse reasons. Despite that, all readers share something special, the ability to share the magic. Be one of us, and have fun :)
