Product Description

Getting into Millwood High, the "tightest" high school in Baltimore, is all that's been consuming thirteen-year-old F.A.T. (Fabulous And Thick, that is) Eboni Michelle Imes. When she's accepted, all that she can think about are four years of fun with her best friends, Michelle, Yolanda, and Charisse—the TTC (the Too Tight Crew).

But life has other plans for Eboni. When her father finally lands his dream job, everyone is excited—except Eboni. While Dad's new business venture means moving the family to glamorous Los Angeles, for Eboni it means moving away from her friends, her crush Vincent, and everything she has ever known.

A charming coming-of-age story that deals with common adolescent issues such as body image, being the "new girl" in school, and adjusting to a new neighborhood, Beacon Hills High is sure to resonate with not only Mo'Nique's young fans, but also teenage girls everywhere.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad   October 5, 2008

Eboni Michelle Imes is a F.A.T. (Fabulous and Thick) girl from Baltimore whose family moves to L.A. when her dad gets a McDonalds franchise there. One thing she notices is how in L.A. size seems to matter a lot more then it did in her home town. There are a couple of incidents where the salesladies are just down right mean to her. She meets some new friends a gay guy named Juan, a black girl named Deb and a sweet Jewish girl named Robin. A thin girl named Maya becomes her nemesis for the affection of the cute popular guy in school and for class president.
Monique's first young adult novel is not that bad although the e-mails to and from her old friends and the prayers (It's not a Christian fiction but there is a lot of praying) get annoying at times. I love how the main character is an overweight girl but I hate how she had to make the thin people in the book have problems: Eboni's nemesis Maya is a rich snob and her friend Deb is borderline anorexic. As much as I love Monique, I wish she would get over her hang ups about skinny girls. I mean it's written where the main character immediately dubs Maya's clique the sticks before she even got to know them simply because they are thin. The whole moving to L.A. just to open a McDonald's seems stupid to me. I mean couldn't they have opened one in Baltimore or a city nearby? Just like with most teen books based in La La Land, there are too many celebrity name droppings. People will get the wrong idea that you are going to bump into celebrities everywhere you go but that just doesn't happen in real life. I lived in L.A. for eighteen years and I can count on one hand how many celebrities I've seen and I've frequent some of the places where they see these celebrities at. The end of the book left a lot of plot holes (Did Eboni win the election? Did her friend Michelle's boyfriend stay with her? Did she and that guy G get together or did he stay with Maya?) I'm wondering if this is meant to be a series and not just one book. I'm hoping for a series because one book is definitely not enough.
