Product Description
THE SMART THING Is to Prepare for the Unexpected.
So reads the fortune cookie fortune that Amanda receives at the beginning of her family’s vacation to Florida. Amanda knows all about preparing for the unexpected—her mother, whom she calls The Captain, is always hard on Amanda, and it’s just when Amanda lets her guard down that the very worst comes through. Looking for acceptance, Amanda turns her attention to boys, and doing whatever she can to be popular at school. That includes making out with the gorgeous senior Rick in his car after school—even though he has a girlfriend. And when Rick offers her The Deal—a real, official date to the Homecoming in front of everyone, in exchange for her virginity—Amanda jumps at the chance. But no matter how you try to prepare for the unexpected, sometimes you can’t. Sharp, chatty, and brutally honest, this debut novel is compulsively readable and heartbreakingly real.

5 out of 5 stars Funny and heartbreaking at the same time - for "girls" of all ages!   July 18, 2008

For Amanda Himmelfarb, everything's a battle - her frizzy hair, a humiliating nickname, her goody-two-shoes disease of a sister ("Malady"), and most of all, her demanding and critical mother, "The Captain". Desperate for love and acceptance, Amanda sets her sights on Rick Hayes, not coincidentally, the boyfriend of her arch-nemesis Courtney Flakey ("Himmelfart's" original architect). But Rick's affection is far too conditional: he's willing to be Amanda's date to the high school dance, although only in exchange for her virginity, a price so high that its aftermath causes Amanda to completely unravel, and forces her to confront the truth about her mother--and herself.

This compelling, and original novel is laugh out-loud funny, but no one will close it without shedding a tear or two. NOT just for young adults, by any means--this book is highly recommended for girls of all ages who've ever had a mother, a daughter, or both.

Amanda Himmelfarb is everything we wish we were---- smart, clever, always ready with a quip. Amanda Himmelfarb is everything we wish we weren't--- insecure, unsure, willing to do the one thing she doesn't want to, just to become popular. The fights between Amanda and her mother (who she nicknames The Captain) are pitch perfect. Biederman and Baldini remind us that high school is the ultimate mine field in this moving and funny novel.

This book is AWESOME! It is a book that transcends time! It is a book that tells a story that all young ladies, ladies, older ladies, and older older ladies can relate to in some way. It is "that" story we ALL have-but perhaps in different words! It is a breath of fresh air...finally! A book that makes you laugh out loud and cry! It makes you realize why you do have to stop and examine the "whys" of life and not make rash decisions- perhaps a seemingly difficult person/situation is that brick wall that you have to decide to climb to find out what beauty lies behind it! :-) Well done, ladies!

Amanda Himmelfarb will touch your heart and make you think of your own teenage challenges. A beautiful story written with wit and truth. The character are beautifully layered with interesting personality traits, and they will draw you into this tale of a mother and daughter navigating the challenges of the adolescent years. Very highly recommended.
