A great book. Just got it and read it as soon as it was delivered. My son and I both loved it. Good writing and Jane Chapman always illustrates beautifully! We recommend this book 100%!

4 out of 5 stars Are yo-o-u--u--u-u a Scaredy-Bear?   November 30, 2008

There's nothing like family in time of storms, the dark, whatever comes along. It's good to have a father who can show bravery and fear. It's good to have a sensible mother. It's good to have a stuffed bunny to sleep with.

The reader gets all of these and more in "The Bears in the Bed and the Great BIG Storm," written by Paul Bright and illustrated by Jane Chapman. It's not a five-star book, but a good, solid four stars, especially for little ones with stormy-night issues.

Not only that, but the details in the illustrations change according to which angle the scene is shown. Things are added, removed, changed around. I didn't notice that until this review. Children see these things that adults skim over, thinking oh well, this is just a simple children's book. One thing never to take for granted is the cleverness of illustrators.

The story is the usual (but how comforting!): The storm is scary, so go sleep with Mom and Dad in the security of their care. Dad takes them in, one by one, assuring each in turn that there are no monsters. Then a Rat-a Tat-Tat comes at their door and he is fearful of monsters. Why, it's just Mr. Moose with his great big antlers shadowing against the lightning. His house has blown away and he, too, seeks safety from the storm.

There are so many wonderful lessons about safety and security and generosity of spirit and home in this slightly over-sized book! This is a book that will bear reading over and over again (catch my pun?).
