Product Description

We all want our children to succeed. What happens when they do?

Britney Spears wanted to sing ever since she was a little girl. But the years of sacrifices, auditions, performances, albums, fame, and paparazzi left the little Louisiana family swept up and spun around, and nothing turned out the way anyone ever imagined or wanted. Now Lynne shares the inside story of the Spears family as only a mother can.

Through the Storm takes readers outside the narrow orbit of the Hollywood glitterati. Lynne shares how fame forever changed their family; her regrets letting managers, agents, and record companies direct the lives of her children; the challenges that shaped Lynne and Jamie's failed marriage and how they affected Bryan, Britney, and Jamie Lynn; the startling events that led to Britney's breakdown; the aftermath of Jamie Lynn's pregnancy; and how the family has tried pulling together to recapture a sense of hope and purpose.

Through the Storm, says Lynne, is "the story of one simple Southern woman whose family got caught in a tornado called fame, and who is still trying to sort through the debris scattered all over her life in the aftermath. It's who I am, warts and all, with some true confessions that took a long time to get up the nerve to discuss."

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully written, heart felt   September 17, 2008

Lynne comes across as a sincere and very humble person who naively accompanied Britney into the world of talent and stardom, not fully realizing how it would change all of their lives. That the tabloids have done the Spears family a huge disservice goes with the territory, unfortunately. Thanks, Lynne, for courageously clearing up the misconceptions we may have made about you and your family. It is always a good thing to get the full story about anyone who is grossly distorted by the media. Although not a Britney fan, per se, I am drawn to the truth and light in this beautiful book. Britney, I hope that you are able to heal and to continue sharing your talents with us. Learn from all of this and continue to be grounded in your talent, your family, and your faith!

God Bless you Lynne and your beautiful famlily!

Britney - Can't wait for the new single and "Circus" to follow :O) You're the best and the world loves you.........

4 out of 5 stars Through the Storm, a rainbow of a story.   September 18, 2008

When rumors started circuling about Lynne's book being a "Britney tell-all" I got worried. Would Britney be upset, would their healed relationship become a mess again? If that happens, would Britney fall apart again?
I've been a fan of Britney since her first smash hit, she was the first CD I ever purchased. She's also the only artist I care enough about to actually 'follow.' I skip gossip and dirty false magazine articles about her out of respect for her as an entertainer. Her personal life is none of my business, but I was interested in getting to know the girl from a small little town and how she came so far. I was curious, what made Britney such an amazing entertainer?
The book starts off with Lynne giving the readers some background history on her own parents (Britney's grandparents) and she tells you about meeting Britney's Dad, Jaime. She writes intimate details on her marriage, her friends, and on how she feels about her children. She does not once exploit Britney or any of her children for that matter, in this book. There are no scandalous stories about how Britney lost her virginity or her said substance abuse. If you're looking for nasty gossip about Britney, then pass on this book because you'll be disappointed.
There are some interesting facts about Britney, on how her Rolling Stones cover happened in 1999, and how Lynne's relation with Britney fell apart. I was happy to finish the book and note that Lynne didn't bash Britney once, and she certainly didn't give intimate details that might embarass her daughter.
This book did however make me realize just how bad the paparazzi are, how vulnerable even celebrities can be to bad people, possibly even more so. Lynne tells the world how she went from small town school teacher to pop-star Britney Spears mom in only a few years.
I hope that after reading this book, more people can appreciate the Spears' family and appreciate Britney for an entertainer. I hope that Britney realizes there are still fans out there that appreciate her music and talent and care about that more than any dumb gossip magazine article on her personal life. I wish nothing but good things for the entire family, because if you read this book, you'll understand that yes, they deserve great things and to be blessed.
I'm glad I read this book, it was an insight in the Spears' home and hearts. Reading the story, you can tell Lynne didn't write this book to sell a scandalous book and make money off of her daughters, she did it to clear the air, and wash her hands of the bad people and things in her and her families life. The Spears' are just like any of 'normal' people, so next time you pick up a magazine with some "scandal" story on Britney, put it down and go home. Then log online and donate that money you would have spent on the magazine to a charity.

3 out of 5 stars An okay read...   September 30, 2008

This book was an easy read, and I don't regret buying it. However, I wasn't as impressed with it as the other reviewers. For one thing, the book jumped around a lot, instead of staying in chronological order. I really thought it could have been organized better. Second, it got very religious, mainly towards the end. It was almost like she was obsessing over it, since her daughters are doing okay now and she no longer needs to obsess over their careers. I'm a christian myself, buy if I wanted to read a religious book I would have purchased one from a more reputable author-no offense to Lynne! Third, and most important, I still see her as a "stage mom". In one sentence Lynne says she was a normal mom taking her ambitious daughter to normal activities. In the next paragraph she talks about driving to Florida to audition for Mickey Mouse Club, then MOVING to New York for 4 months while Britney starred in a play when she was only 10 or 11 years old! I'm sorry, but a line was clearly crossed somewhere around that time! I don't care how many doors were opening for Britney, Lynne should have closed them until she was older! I have a 10 year old daughter, and I would never allow so many activities and competions. Money and fame aren't aren't everything. Family and education are the most important.
To sum it up, I don't agree with the way Lynne raised her kids, and I feel she's good at playing the "naive" card. However, I'm still glad I gave the book a chance and tried to see her point of view.

5 out of 5 stars Proof that you Can't Believe Everything you See or Hear   September 29, 2008

Surprisingly this was a great read. I finished it in one sitting. If you watch television or skim headlines at all you MUST be aware of the sad downfall of Britney Spears. We all have our assumptions based on the flashes across the TV screen, magazine covers, countless websites and newspaper headlines. Lynne Spears sets the record straight. This book is NOT a tell-all book of gossip on her daughter, nor is it a parenting manual. Rather it is a memoir of her life and the truth behind the scandal, which is far from what the public has been told up to this point.

If you're looking for scoop though, you won't be disappointed either. Lynne reveals what was happening in their world the day Britney shaved her head, attacked the paparazzi with an umbrella, was forced from her home by police and paremedics and more. Lynne also addresses the pregnancy of her daughter Jamie Lynn.

All in all, you come to learn (if you haven't been smart enough to know already) that there is dangerous power in the press and paparazzi. No celebrities do NOT sign up for this kind of attention nor do they deserve it. Adoration is one thing, assault so extreme you can't even literally walk out your front door is another. No one signs up for that, no matter WHAT you tell me about them choosing fame. The craziness and obsession that drives photographers to that extreme is a relatively new phenomenon that must be controlled before we have another celebrity death, ala Princess Diana. What will be the turning point? I don't know. What I do know is that Lynne Spears paints a real, heartfelt, non-glamorous picture of the world she and her children were thrust into all because her daughters LOVE to sing and dance. I was impressed with Lynne Spears faith, vulnerability and willingness to let it all hang out. Both Lynne's daughters and her son will be proud of this book. Unlike other celebrity moms who have destroyed their mother/daughter relationship by writing tell-alls, Lynne Spears has written a book that honors them without glorifying or excusing any of their failures, as well as encourage us all to have strength in the storm, no matter what storm we face.

Pick up this book and find out for yourself. You'll find yourself not judging Britney so harshly, rather you'll actually start praying for her! (Something she and her family would appreciate I'm sure).
