Product Description

He is nameless.
He is homeless.
He is friendless.
He is lost.

Until he is found . . . by a team of mutts who shelter him and teach him how to survive the wilds of the city park.

And so he becomes Waggit, the best hunter and tracker in the pack, and the dog with the most powerfully wagging tail. Waggit grows to love his team, especially its leader, Tazar, and his best friend, an old dog named Lowdown.

But life in the park is dangerous and uncertain. In winter, food and warmth are scarce. Another team of wild dogs is a constant menace. And always, there is the fear of capture by park rangers. Waggit can't help feeling that something is missing . . . something warm and cozy and . . . human. Then one day everything changes and Waggit must face a new threat and a new choice.

Peter Howe's tale of an abandoned puppy's search for a home is an exciting mix of humor, adventure, and suspense. Most of all, it is a story of how love can turn strangers into family.

What a great read.. the dogs have personalities so you feel you get to know them like friends. I couldn't put it down. I LOVE THIS BOOK! It's going to make a great movie! I haven't been this excited about a book in a long time. I hope there is a sequel. I want more!

5 out of 5 stars A delicious story!   July 12, 2008

Waggit is an abandoned puppy who believes that he has accidentally been separated from his owner in Central Park. While searching frantically for his owner, Waggit is observed by a dog who reads the situation accurately and gently leads the puppy to a hideout where a group of abandoned dogs dwell in what can be described only as a commune.
Here we meet the individuals on "the Team." We learn about their roles in the group, their responsibilities to each other, their code of ethics, and their strategies for surviving in the park and for avoiding both a fierce team of rival dogs and the dog-catcher. This is a charming tale of friendship and adventure.
What is most refreshing is that the author, a native of Britain, writes in an elegant style reminiscent of classic children's literature. Many words are outside the vocabulary of an eight- or nine-year old, but this "chapter book" will grab the child's attention. The story will entertain while the style is enriching the child's vocabulary. What a gem!

I really enjoyed this book! The story had lots of different adventures in it. It was funny at times and it was sad at times. There was something new at the end of every chapter that made me want to read the next chapter. I highly recommend this book to other readers. (Age 9)

5 out of 5 stars My son and I loved this book!   July 13, 2008

My 10yr old son and I enjoyed this fun book to read together. Waggit is likely to become the modern day Lassie! My son says, "I think this book is great. What I liked about Waggit's Tale is that the dog pack goes on a lot of great adventures and gets chased. My favorite part was when Lowdown tricked Waggit to pounce on a metal dog statue. I liked that part because it was funny and then the real trouble came. I learned that there is always someone that loves you in the world. I would recommend this book to anyone. It is funny, adventurous and really entertaining."
- What a breath of fresh air to find a book this fun and wholesome at the same time! I hope there will be some sequals!!!!- Greg Brake
