Product Description
Dubbed the "Mayor of Running," Bart Yasso is one of the best-known figures in the sport, but few people know why he started running competitively, how it changed his life, or how his brush with a crippling illness nearly ended his career a decade ago. With insight and humor, My Life on the Run chronicles the heatstroke and frostbite, heartache and triumphs he’s experienced while competing in more than 1,000 competitive races during his nearly 30 years with Runner’s World magazine.
Yasso gives valuable and practical advice on how to become a runner for life and continually draw joy from the sport. He also offers practical guidance for beginners, intermediate, and advanced runners, such as 5-K, half-marathon, and marathon training schedules including his innovative technique known as the Yasso 800s.
Recounting his adventures in exotic locales like Antarctica, Africa, and Chitwan National Park in Nepal (where he was chased by an angry rhino), Yasso recommends the best exotic marathons for runners who want to grab their passports to test themselves on foreign terrain. With the wit and wisdom of a seasoned insider, he tells runners what they need to know to navigate the logistics of running in an unfamiliar country.
Yasso’s message is this: Never limit where running can take you because each race has the potential for adventure.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational Read   May 18, 2008

Whether you are a seasoned runner or an aspiring beginner this book is worth the read. As I read this book I found myself catapulted from deep contemplation to laughter within the course of a few sentences.
Through this collection of stories Yasso takes us through the highs and lows of his life and the great joy of running (and biking). He offers salient advice for those who want to run better without making it sound like a "how to" section.
Whether you run or just read this is a book of inspiration that is too good to pass up on.

5 out of 5 stars redemption   May 15, 2008

It's a story of redemption - the kind any person can appreciate. It's a story of world-wide adventures any runner can enjoy. It's an honest story of a man who found his deepest meaning and achievement in running. It made me laugh; it made me cry. It made me want to achieve more in running and in life. Through Bart's life on the run I came to understand the world-wide appeal of running and the support in the world-wide community of runners. I hope Bart gets to run that last race!

5 out of 5 stars Girl on the Run   May 19, 2008

I have read this book once and now am reading it a second time. I am a new runner and I have to say that I can relate to some of the things Bart talks about. The smoking and beer drinking were much higher on my list and running was no where to be seen. Now I do not smoke or drink and I am running. My weight loss is not coming quickly enough but Bart's book shows you that patience is the key. I do not have much of that but I figure if Bart could handle the Burro then I can concur my weight issues. I already love to run and jog and walk and just being active. I am really looking forward to where running will take me. Thanks Bart for being such a great inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars Taco Bell is bad for you! (Both the burro and the fast food place)   May 20, 2008

I laughed, I cried (okay, one tear), and for a fleeting moment I was almost jealous that I have never been in a Burro race. This book is hard to put down once you start it. I would say it is a must read even if you are not a runner.
