5 blue ribbons for Romance Junkies for Maya Bank's OVERHEARD January 16, 2008
Gracie Evans is a woman who desires excitement and adventure in the bedroom, unfortunately the men she chooses to date are staid. All of her attempts at getting her current boyfriend to try something more exciting are met with resistance and disgust so she breaks up with him just two weeks before Valentine's Day.
Luke Foresythe is one of Gracie's good friends and as far as she's concerned he's also one of the most irritating men she knows. Everything with them is a competition and they're always trying to one up each other. The simple fact that all her friends are so supportive is the very reason that Gracie doesn't want any of the men knowing that she broke up with Keith. She doesn't need or want their pity or the "I told you so's."
Gracie gets together with her group of close knit friends just about every weekend. This weekend they're all hanging out and barbecuing. Her friends all realize that Gracie is much more reserved than normal but she chooses to confide in Michelle while helping to set the table. Instead of just explaining about the break up, Gracie explains that none of the men she dates are able to satisfy her. She has fantasies about bondage and spankings. More than anything she'd like to experience a menage. Gracie's convinced that she's going to be stuck with just her toys for satisfaction because it's quite possible there isn't a man alive who can satisfy her in bed. She doesn't realize that Luke is right outside the door and has OVERHEARD every word of her fantasy. She's just presented him with a challenge that he won't be able to resist.
If you've ever had sexual fantasies that you would never dare to reveal to a man in your life you'll be able to fully appreciate the charm of OVERHEARD. I caught myself holding my breath in anticipation during some of the scenes and found myself in awe of the way Gracie and Luke interact with each other and the obvious affection the entire group of friends all share. I really love that these characters were first introduced in UNDERSTOOD so you get the feeling that you're revisiting old friends. Maya Banks is an awesome storyteller. I've never been disappointed with any of her stories and anticipate seeing many more of her fabulous stories in the near future.

With Valentine's Day fast approaching, Jacqueline "Jack" Monroe can't help but be a bit sad at her lack of a significant other. Incidentally, the only man to capture her attention is Caleb, the ex-fiance of one of her closest friends, Claire. Between naughty visuals and romantic ruminations, Jack struggles with feelings of disloyalty. She simply doesn't know how to continue being a friend to Caleb, and still maintain her longstanding friendship with Claire. When Caleb makes one simple request, Jack resolves her dilemma by following her heart.
Caleb Sinclair has been attracted to Jacqueline longer than he dares admit. Especially since he has only been `unengaged' for little over a month. Sensing that his strong feelings for Jack are mutual, Caleb uses the excuse of a pre-paid mini vacation to convince Jacqueline to go out of town with him. Once they are at their destination, he pulls no punches and takes no prisoners. Jacqueline is his, forever.
BE MINE should come with a label that states, "Warning: Scorching hot!" It was just that combustible. Caleb and Jacqueline's relationship, even when just friends, was loaded with sexual tension. I could feel the wanting and desire each felt for the other. As their relationship progressed, I found myself lost in their sexuality. When Caleb whispered naughty things to Jacqueline, I almost could hear his voice in my head. Sinful, I tell you! 100% decadence! And I treasured every word.
BE MINE is the first book I've read by Gwendolyn Cease. After being introduced to the hot sensuality of her writing, Ms. Cease immediately moved to my "must buy" list. When an author writes a book that makes me my heart flutter, my palms sweat and my face blush, I know I've found an author worth following. BE MINE is a wonderful read. I just put it down, but I'm ready to pick it back up and start again!

"Forever Valentine" by Bianca D'Arc:

Ian Sinclair was assigned to ensure Jena does not reveal the existence of the Vampire race to the world, but can't bring himself to end the assignment, even long after he has assured himself she will keep the secret. Seized by a furious jealousy when he follows her on Valentine's Day date, he realizes he can no longer sit on the sidelines merely watching her...
When Ian discovers Jena's dangerous secret, he realizes he must protect her at all costs!
Caught by Cupid: Forever Valentine by Bianca D'Arc is the fourth story in her Vampire Tales saga. While I have thoroughly enjoyed each of the four tales, I have to say that Forever Valentine is by far my favorite of them! In a sense, this story feels like more of a beginning to the series than the first book in the series did, as it launches a mystery that promises to unfold in subsequent releases. While the other stories definitely laid the framework well for the Vampire Tales saga, Forever Valentine whets the appetite for more, laying the groundwork for stories that might involve 2 other couples we meet in this book.
In addition, Forever Valentine reveals revelations concerning all four of the current Vampire Tales stories that answer some of the questions I know had crossed my mind more than once. D'Arc has taken the readers' willingness to suspend disbelief in some areas, and rewarded it with an exciting, yet logical explanation for apparent coincidences!
But enough of that - you want to know about Ian and Jena, right? Ian falls into love with all the fierceness one would expect from an 800-year-old vampire who had finally given up all hope of ever finding his true mate. Fully alpha male, he is also amazingly tender with Jena, as well as perceptive. He respects Jena for the intelligent doctor she is and still sees the desirable woman underneath her independent exterior.
Jena's story is heartbreakingly noble, and the reader is led through her fears and emotions concerning not only Ian, but the secret that endangers her very existence.
While Forever Valentine is enhanced if read in sequence, it does serve well as a standalone novel, should the reader choose to read it first. But I definitely recommend reading them consecutively to enjoy the impact of the revelation this story brings!

"Overheard" by Maya Banks:
Gracie Evans is tired of settling for boyfriends who can't satisfy her in bed. After dumping the last one, she finds herself spilling her fantasies to her friend Shelly in the kitchen at a barbecue.
Luke Forsythe knows Gracie would kill him if she ever found out he was eavesdropping during the entire conversation, but that doesn't stop him from using the information he learned! After all, what he learned of her secret desires coupled with the fact that they've been close friends for years might just make her the perfect woman for him. Now he just has to prove he is the right man for her - and he knows just how to do it!
This is the second book I've read by Maya Banks, and as with the first, she has left me hungry for more! The woman seriously knows how to write a menage scene! More than that, Caught by Cupid: Overheard, is a wonderfully sweet and spicy love story between friends.
Gracie is given an opportunity few of us have, but many of us wish for: finding her perfect match right under her very nose, in a man who is already one of her closest friends. While eavesdropping is not necessarily the politest thing to do, readers can understand why Luke is riveted when he accidentally finds himself listening in on Gracie's fantasies. And who can really fault him when the information serves to shake him up and see his friend Gracie in a new light?
Luke is the bad boy who definitely makes good once he finds the right woman. In spite of his womanizing past, he is determined to do right by Gracie, which shows in everything he does.
Overheard is the kind of story that prompts you to take a look at your friends and see if maybe, just maybe, your own soul mate may be closer than you think...
While Overheard is connected to Maya Banks upcoming book `Understood', they are not dependent on each other, and can be read separately.

"Be Mine" by Gwendolyn Cease:
While Jack (Jaqueline) and Caleb have maintained their friendship since he broke up with her best friend, she still feels awkward around him now. Now that he is available, she has started to realize her feelings for him go way beyond simple friendship.
Jack is not Caleb's usually type, but he is beginning to wonder if maybe he has been dating the wrong type all along. Since his ex-fiancee called off his engagement, he doesn't seem to want any woman but Jack. In fact, he can think of no one else he wants to spend Valentine's Day with. And he just happens to have reservations at a romantic little bed and breakfast... Now he just needs to convince her to spend Valentine's Day weekend with him - not to mention the rest of her life!
Gwendolyn Cease is a relatively new author, with just two published books under her belt, I believe. With Caught by Cupid: Be Mine she is off to a great start at Samhain with a wonderful romance that satisfies on many levels. Readers are treated to a beautiful love story between two friends, and plenty of spicy scenes to top it all off!
Released as part of Samhain's Caught by Cupid anthology, Be Mine easily holds its own with the other two authors in this anthology. Indeed, the author's writing style is so polished, I am convinced she has a bookshelf full of stories she has written that have not been published yet. Here is hoping I am right and that we see some more of her work very soon!
Caleb and Jack's romance reminds us that we should never discount possible romance based on what or who we think our `type' is. Love is often found in the unlikeliest of places, and in the most unexpected form.
Caleb's pursuit of Jack is masterful, as he applies just the right amount of pressure to convince her to take a chance, without scaring her into running.
Jack's consideration of both her friendship with Caleb and respect for her best friend who once planned to marry him is admirable, and provides sound reasoning for her reservations concerning pursuing a romance with Caleb.
Although short, Be Mine is completely satisfying, leaving no part of the story unfinished - although I will admit the steamy scenes will leave you panting for more!
