Product Description It's a hot, humid July night in New York City. Where were you when the lights went out?A New York City resident for many years, Carol Higgins Clark was there during the blackout of 2003. Not surprisingly, she felt that Regan and Jack Reilly should one day share the experience! As Zapped begins, the Reillys return home from a summer weekend to the loft in Tribeca they are in the agonizing process of renovating and expanding. They are looking forward to a quiet supper on their newly acquired rooftop terrace. But it's not meant to be. While Jack goes to pick up Chinese food, Regan enters their apartment, unaware that a nervous thief, who preceded her by minutes, is hiding in the front closet. A thief who knows about a hidden safe that Regan and Jack have yet to discover. Minutes later, the blackout strikes, and both Reillys are called into action. A new gallery in SoHo, featuring treasured glass sculptures from all over the world, has been burglarized. As head of the NYPD Major Case Squad, Jack oversees several departments. Art theft is one of them. PI Regan hears from her best friend, Kit, who is in Manhattan on business. She's been abandoned at a comedy club by a colleague from an insurance convention, Georgina Mathieson, who ran out for a cigarette moments before the blackout struck and never came back. Kit gets a call that Georgina is disturbed and dangerous. Fueled by her rage at a college boyfriend who dumped her, Georgina seeks revenge on unsuspecting young blond men. She was last seen getting into a cab outside the club -- with a tall blond. Regan heads the search for Georgina and her potential victim. Meanwhile, Lorraine Lily, an almost famous actress, returns to New York City the night of the blackout, after spending three months in England doing a play, and is informed by her estranged husband, Conrad Spreckles, that he'd sold his loft to their next-door neighbors, the Reillys. Lorraine had never told him about the hidden safe she'd had installed in the closet. If she doesn't get back what's in there, she's sure her budding career will be ruined. In Zapped, Clark takes readers on a tour of the city they won't forget and introduces them to a wonderful cast of colorful, eccentric characters whose stories intersect in precarious and often humorous ways during one very dark and hot summer night.

ZAP THIS ONE FROM YOUR READING LIST April 22, 2008 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
The reason this author is published? Two words, Higgins Clark! Worse than reading this book is listening to the audio version narrated by none other than the author. The story is full of her usual coincidences, miracles and tedious descriptions. I tried to listen to this while driving and found it utterly inane. The book is so bad that I fast-forwarded my way through 3/4 of it just to get it over with. The entire plot is ridiculous but outdone by the unbelievable luck that Regan Reilly has in finding the right people at the right time in a blackout in NYC. Perhaps this would be believable if classified as "fantasy" but the words mystery and suspense do not describe this artless, poorly written book. If you have read any of the previous Regan Reilly books, don't waste your money as you have the "formula" already. Rich people are good, poor people are bad. The rich private eye daughter of a famous writer saves the day with the assistance of her rich husband who happens to be well-placed in the police department. The stories get more unbelievable but the formula remains the same. If you feel you must know (like it would be a surprise) how this one ends...read the final pages at the bookstore. You will miss ABSOLUTELY nothing worth paying to read. Carol has written on her mother's coat tails for far too long...it's time for her to retire Regan to a mansion in The Hamptons and for Carol to follow her lead.
Not Her Mothers Daughter April 25, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
If you love Mary Higgins Clark, don't make the mistake that I did and assume you'll enjoy Carol's writing as well. Her pathetic attempt to create characters and write prose as brilliantly as her mother does isn't worth the paper on which it's printed. My guess is that the publishers are doing her mother a favor by publishing these dull, sophomoric works. The writing on the level of a clever high school student. There's so many uses of the passive voice that it could be a primer for bad writing. And the descrpiton of Regan and Nora are sorry attempts at describing herself and her mother. Don't buy these books if you like good writing.
Oh man....this is BAD! July 1, 2008 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
I am a HUGE Mary Higgins Clark fan - and I've read pretty much everything she's ever written, including a few that she wrote with her daughter Carol. Why did I think that Carol's writing would be similar to Mary's. What a dummy I must be. Carol Higgins Clark's writing is really pretty bad. But, what's FAR worse is her attempt to narrate her audio book. Oh dear! The tone of her voice just grates on the nerves, her attempt to dramatize is pathetic, and her overall 'acting' is a total joke.
Another fun read in this series! April 9, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have been looking forward to Clark's next Regan Reilly mystery since finishing Laced (Regan Reilly Mysteries, No. 10) last year. This time out Megan and hubby find themselfs in the dark when the lights go out in NYC. Regan is home alone when this happens and she soon discovers she is not alone....I don't want to ruin the surprises but the duo find themselves on the trail of a psychopathic female. This is not high brow literature but great fare for the beach. If you're a fan you'll get what you are expecting.
A Fast, Fun, Fluffy Read April 10, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Carol Higgins Clark has written another fun book in her Regan Reilly series, one which was hard to put down but very quick to finish. As usual there are no really serious crimes in this book and no really heinous criminals. All is basically well that ends well, and it does. I found myself feeling quite sorry for Georgina, who had a really bad life. I hope she got the therapy she desperately needed. And I wondered why Lillian didn't even think about picking up the phone, calling Regan, and asking about the letters instead of trying to do things the hard way.
I have no real complaints about this book, but I missed Regan's parents. I hope to see more of them in the next book.
For a fun read on an airplane, on a long car ride (please, not if you're the driver!!!), or on a night before the television programs delayed by the writers' strike come back on, get this book. You will enjoy it.
