Be sure to include selenium in your nutrition regimen September 12, 2005 34 out of 36 found this review helpful
I agree with the idea of fighting cancer with nutrition. However, I would like to note that the cancer-fighting nutrient most proven to date is selenium. A daily supplement of 200 microgram of selenium, has been shown in a large placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical study -- the most prestigious type of scientific study of nutrients and drugs -- to cut the death rate from cancer in half.
Specifically, a large group of people who were given each day a yeast tablet enriched with 200 micrograms (mcg) of selenium had only half the number of deaths from cancer over a seven year period as a similarly large control group who were given a daily yeast tablet containing no selenium. Yeast tablets enriched with 200 mcg of selenium are readily available at pharmacies as well as health stores across the U.S. for about $5 or so for a bottle of 50 to 100 tablets -- only 10 cents or less per day -- I do.
The results of this dramatic study were published in the medical profession's own journal: The Journal of the American Medical Association. Nevertheless, most doctors pay no attention to the results. Think about that, selenium (at 10 cents per day or less) has been shown in a large clinical study to cut the death rate from cancer in half and nobody tells the public about it. Incredible! In my opinion, as a research chemist, everybody in the U.S. should take supplemental selenium every day.
Other good cancer fighters include vitamin C, vitamin E, CoQ10, and lycopene.
Challenging cancer one step at a time November 5, 2002 30 out of 30 found this review helpful
"Challenge Cancer and Win" is an invaluable book for anyone going through cancer treatment. The book is loaded with information about what foods do, how vitamins and supplements work, sample diets, and nutrition plans for specific cancers. A diagnosis of cancer left us feeling "out of control", but this book, written in a clear, easy to understand way has helped us to regain some control both during and after our treatment period. We really appreciate the positive, well-balanced approach Kim uses which allows the reader to choose "good", "better", or "best" as the steps to take while making practical nutritional and lifestyle changes. We were eating "good", but now we are eating "better" and feeling better as well. There are hints and recommendations for healthier eating, advice on handling side affects of treatment, details about the foods which support and build the body during chemotherapy, helpful charts and even recipes Our clinic has a copy of "Challenge Cancer" so others who are facing a diagnosis of cancer and treatment can reap the benefits of Kim's years of experience helping cancer patients. Having this book was almost like having a private "coach" to help us through our cancer treatment. We highly recommend "Challenge Cancer and Win" to anyone who wants a better understanding of how nutrition can affect cancer and who wish to become more pro-active in challenging their disease.
Clarifying Supplements May 15, 2005 25 out of 27 found this review helpful
I was drawn to obtaining this book because a family member has just been diagnosed with cancer. Also, it appeared to be similar to my book on diabetes. This 460 page book is an excellent reference tool. It contributes much to the understanding of what you can do by taking a nutrition approach to challenge a person's specific cancer. In the supplements section it was not as clear as the rest of the text as to what supplements to take. There are thirteen supplements with about a third appearing to be generally good for all cancers, ie ALA and chromium. In a future edition, these supplements could be sorted out first, and then highlighting which supplements are needed for specific cancers. This takes away the thought of having to digest the thireteen. The next edition could be further enhanced by putting supplements into categories of essential, very important, etc. Sometimes a person is so busy not to have time to take all of the recommended supplements. Identifying the most beneficial ones provides the focus the person needs. The book is a must read by anyone with cancer, and to take the guidance of the nutritional approach that helps prevent or rid themselves of cancer. A must have for dietitians who see cancer patients! October 29, 2002 23 out of 23 found this review helpful
"Challenge Cancer and Win! Step-By-Step Nutrition Action Plans for Your Specific Cancer" is a must have! Being a dietitian who consults with cancer patients on a regular basis I have found this book to be invaluable. It provides in depth, evidenced based nutrition recommendations for various types of cancer. As someone who has spent time researching to put all the pieces together to devise useful cancer nutrition plans I am so glad to have stumbled upon this book which had done just that! Better yet, the information is presented in a reader friendly manner.
Healthy for both of us! October 13, 2002 19 out of 19 found this review helpful
My husband and I bought this book to help with his prostate cancer. He had a PSA does a couple months ago and it was down to 0.4! I also followed the diet and supplement plan to prevent the villous adenoma in my colon from becoming malignant. In the past, my checkups have shown regrowth. Now I have good news that I have had no regrowth and my dcotor told me to keep on doing what I was doing, don't change a thing. The guidelines in the book are easy to follow and we both consider this a critical lifestyle change. Another plus side is I've lost 38 lbs!
