Great resource August 14, 2008 17 out of 18 found this review helpful
I have used Video Hound for years; their quality and coverage are excellent. Although I like Roger Ebert and Peter Travers (Rolling Stone) better as reviewers, this is the best compilation of reviews available (the Maltin book is hard to use, of poor quality, and generally the reviews are less accurate and thoughtful). The web site that goes with the book is fabulous and allows searches and lists. Together they make an unbeatable resource.
Great book! August 23, 2008 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
This is an invaluable resource for any movie lover. I get a new edition every year and pass the previous one to my friends, who are delighted to get it. If you've ever watched a movie on TV and couldn't remember, "What other movies did this director make?" or "In what other movies have I seen this actor?" OR "For which other movies did this composer write music?" etc,. you can look it up here. It has a Categories Index if you can't remember the title of a film, an Awards index if you want to know who won the Oscar any given year, and every film is reviewed and rated; plus, it tells you if a film is available on DVD, videotape, or both, and its length, year of release, country of origin, language, subtitles, etc. LOVE IT!!!
Best Movie Book Around August 29, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I buy the VideoHound's Golden Movie Retriever every single year. My two sons each buy their own. We have never found a more comprehensive guide to movies. If they ever stop making this book, we will be very disappointed!
Video Hound's Golden Movie Retriever September 30, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Video Hound is the best way yet to evaluate a movie before buying or renting it. I am impressed by the multiple ways to search - actors, material content, category, rating, etc. No negative aspects except that many good foreign movies are excluded, and you need a new version every couple of years to keep up with newer films.
This Book Rocks-Settles any argument instantly! October 12, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is the 4th Videohound book that I have purchased over the past 10 years. The information is presented in short, sweet, concise paragraphs that cut straight to the point. The greatest feature of the Videohound books is the cross-reference ability. This book has settled many an argument in my house about the year of a film or who was in it. A must have if you live with a trivia buff. Excellent for finding obscure films that you didn't know were hiding out there somewhere. Well worth the money, an excellent gift for that hard to buy for person.
