Product Description In our universe, a Cardassian sleeper agent--Iliana Ghemor--was once surgically altered to resemble and replace resistance fighter Kira Nerys, future Starfleet captain and hero of the planet Bajor's liberation. That plan never reached fruition, and the fate of the agent remained unknown...until now.Robbed of the past sixteen years, Iliana Ghemor is back with a vengeance. Over a decade and a half of imprisonment and abuse by her former masters has brought her to the brink of madness, sustained only by the twisted belief that she is, in fact, the real Kira Nerys. She has already made one near-successful attempt on the real Kira's life, but instead of assuming the identity of the woman she was intended to replace, Ghemor has set her sights on the most unexpected target of all: Kira's other double, the malicious Intendent, Bajor's iron-fisted ruler in the alternate reality commonly known as the "Mirror Universe." But far more is unfolding in the Mirror Universe than Ghemor realizes, and the heroes of Deep Space Nine somehow must stop the false Kira without derailing the delicate flow of history that must unfold if both universes, and countless others, are to survive. Parallel stories set in both universes reflect and build upon each other in this Two-in-One "Flip Book," the continuation of both the ongoing DS9 saga as well as the Mirror Universe line of books.

Plenty to offer July 21, 2008 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
In my opinion, the negative reviews this book is getting are based solely on the fact that it didn't give people what they wanted. They expected Fearful Symmetry to continue the action of Warpath, to provide confrontation and lots of plot twists. I can see why they're disappointed, but I also think there's a ton of great stuff going on with this book. Keep an open mind, and you'll enjoy it.
Where Warpath was all about action and drama, Fearful Symmetry slows down and really lets the characters shine. Sisko's scene at the beginning of side 1 gives the purpose in a nutshell: to look at the possibilities and paths things might take. All of the characters get their screen time, even the minor ones. Olivia Woods has them all down pat, and does an excellent job of making you want to know what happens to them next. I'm sad that I have to wait another year for The Soul Key and The Never Ending Sacrifice (August and September 2009), but now I want to read them more than ever.
As for Iliana's story, yes, it's brutal. But it's not graphic...Woods doesn't get into detail for the brutal parts. What she does achieve, however, is to make Iliana Ghemor into a deep, sympathetic villain. I almost find myself rooting for her after reading her story. And the way the two sides of the flipbook intersect is brilliant. Just make sure you read side 1 first.
I would give the book five stars if it were longer. If Pocketbooks were serious about keeping these stories going, they should get them out more often. Otherwise, they're going to lose readers who are tired of waiting.
My expectations were and were not met June 25, 2008 7 out of 15 found this review helpful
With the excellent cliff hanger from Warpath, I wanted to get right into the battle for the wormhole, not more back story with no action. I would have taken a battle and some back story. I like the involvement of Sisko (one of my favorite characters) and his role as Emissary, Commander Vaughn getting an covert assingment, and contacting the Mirror Universe. This is why I can not pann the book.
I was not for all the emphasis on Iliana Ghemor - she is not Kira, nor will I care for her character in the same way. She joined the Obisidan Order voluntarily - she knew her country and what her countrymen are capable of. I felt for her character during her imprisonment but I felt that the book was trying to justify her craziness by blaming Dukat. Unless Dukat will comes back (hey Sisko did), I do not see an effective resolution to both her characters.
If the continuation was out at the same time (and by that I mean the fight for the wormhole), the rating would have been higher. My thinking is that they could have led off publishing the Trek Nor novels (I learned nothing new except that Ro is attacted to Bajorans :) ) and had Fear Symmetry come out in 2007, when it was first due. Maybe the rating would have been higher because I wouldn't have waited to come down from the cliffhanger of Warpath.
A "Fearful" DS9 Novel July 7, 2008 6 out of 13 found this review helpful
With as much delay and hype this book has received over the past year or so, I had high hopes for this book. "Warpath", the previous DS9 novel, and the DS9 installment of the Mirror Universe anthology both alluded to an exciting setup and story to come in "Fearful Symmetry". As a result, the final product leaves much to be desired and comes off as rather predictable, cliched and lacking with two plots trying to compete with each other in 130 or so pages (each)
You'll like how this book continues with the events of "Unity" and the last few DS9 novels that have dealt with a focus on the Mirror Universe as explored and defined by the DS9 series. Part of this book picks up where "Warpath" ends, with a cliffhanger that definitely set a high bar for the follow-up. And that's where the problems and issues arise for me as a reader.
What you won't like is this flip-book concept. While it sounds interesting; the same story from two character's point of view, it actually leaves a lot out if this were a straight-forward novel. The Iliana Ghemor side (book 2) is her fall into the Obsidian Order and eventual plunge into insanity. While I liked how this short novella filled in some missing pieces to old DS9 episodes, I kept wanting to read more about what occured after 'Warpath' and how she fits into the Taran'tar plot, or the attack on Ro and Kira. Then comes the Kira side, 'Book 1' ... and everything feels rushed. Not really fast paced or intriguing, but simply rushed. And we get, after waiting more than a year for this novel, aboslutely not resolution to this plot. We have to wait who knows how long for yet another installment. Book 1 and Book 2 aren't focusing on the same set of events; Ghemor's half is all what leads to her situation while Kira's part is what happens right after the end of "Warpath". The book ends on yet another cliffhanger which this time isn't the type that has you screaming for more. Instead, it's one that has you flipping through the pages asking "that's it?"
I was let down by the plot and execution of the book. This flip-concept did nothing more for the story than to boggle it down. By the time I read through the 'present' events I was left trying to remember the previous books and their characters, and then being upset that the book was ending on yet another cliffhanger while nothing had been resolved. This is the first DS9-Relaunch book that I really didn't care for. I liked parts of it but it still felt lacking and weak. Buy this book used or get it from your local library -- definitely not worth the 7.99 price tag and tax.
I Cannot Recommend This Book. June 24, 2008 4 out of 20 found this review helpful
I don't normally do this, and especially to a DS9 book, but I have to give this book a "zero" rating.
In the section of the book that deals with Iliana Ghemor's story, I think that the author crossed a line in terms of description of the abuses which that character suffers. My feeling is that they were graphic and unnecessary.
I am very surprised that those charged with maintaining the Star Trek image let this one get by and into print.
A good book, but.... June 29, 2008 4 out of 14 found this review helpful
I am disappointed that I will have to wait to read more of the story. Let's not wait two years to finish it, OK?
