From the supplier: The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has been urged to create mandatory safety standards for escalators. Voluntary standards of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, whose membership includes industry officials, are available to manufacturers. According to CPSC statistics, 21 deaths from escalators have occurred since 1985. There were 5,900 injuries on escalators between 1990 and 1994, the most recent period for which the agency has statistics.
