1 out of 5 stars What about us Mac users   September 23, 2007

OK, I get it NBC is feuding with apple over the itunes store pricing but by making this download unavailable to all us Mac users amazon and NBC are alienating a growing part of their user base.
Please leave coporate politics out of the whole process of buying a show. Shame on you Amazon.

1 out of 5 stars Great show but...   September 21, 2007

This is a great show, my favorite in fact. I'm not rating the show here. The service what I'm rating. What's the point? Go buy the DVD it's cheaper (at least at some stores) and you get special features that aren't available for download, like the original un-aired pilot. What's the point of having downloadable episodes if you can't put them on your iPod or Zune or whatever you may have.

Get a clue NBC and Amazon! You're driving viewers away.

4 out of 5 stars Another somewhat disappointing episode of last year's breakout show   October 23, 2007

First, my four-star rating is a tad generous. I rounded it up from the three and a half that it deserves.

A host of fans and ex-fans and critics have thoroughly thrashed HEROES so far this season. I doubt if this episode and the incredibly disappointing use of Kristen Bell will turn things around. The reason the show has gone south is easy to locate: the writing is simply below par. This comes out in a host of ways. Let me enumerate just a few.

First, after a fun Season One in which we were all waiting for the various heroes to come together, they were all immediately dispersed in the first episode of Season Two. Structurally, everything that happened in Season One screamed for some unification of the characters. But nothing like this occurred. Instead, the series feels like it has been restarted. Not good.

Second, instead of focusing on the already large cast of characters, they decided to introduce a large number of new characters. I think the fury of many fans against the Central American sister and brother making their way north is more than anything anger that time is being spent on characters other than those already established. And while I really like Dana Davis and think she is the cutest thing this side of sliced toast, her power seems too similar to Peter's. Anything she sees others do, she can do as well. Anyone with a power, Peter can acquire by being in close proximity.

Third, the stories simply aren't very interesting so far. It is possible that the foundation for an interesting story later on is being laid, but not much so far has actually been very compelling.

The introduction of Kristen Bell is a prime example of what has gone wrong with the show. I've avoided spoilers so I wasn't sure what her power was going to be (though had I seen the teaser that Amazon's Unbox uses to introduce it I might have). They reveal her power almost immediately and in such a mundane way! Wasted opportunity guys! It should have been teased out a bit. And after she finds out where Peter Petrelli is she is called away from Ireland to another part of the world. Why? The only interesting thing about her debut was the revelation that she works for her father. But here again I'm afraid that HEROES is going to disappoint. Usually when we get info like that in a well written show we imagine that we don't know who the father is, only to learn later that we do. My fear is that we haven't met her father but that he will be an entirely new character.

I enjoyed HEROES in Season One, but I always thought it was somewhat overrated by many fans. I was astonished that anyone considered this better than LOST, let alone vastly superior shows like BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS. And PUSHING DAISIES can be added to that list. But this year so far at least 15 or 20 shows have been better. I gave Season One a five-star review and I do feel that it deserved it. But overall so far I would give Season Two a three. But I tend to be an optimist. I both hope and believe it will get better.

One last word. I wonder what the departure of Bryan Fuller as Consulting Producer has meant for the show. He wrote what was far and away the best episode of HEROES so far, the absolutely splendid (and Emmy nominated) "Company Man." I don't know how much he brought to the show. But I do know this: so far HEROES has been a disappointment, while Bryan Fuller's new show PUSHING DAISIES has debuted with three absolutely astonishing episodes. I hope the title of Fuller's new show doesn't eventually apply to his old one.

5 out of 5 stars This is a forum for the show, not for tech reviews...   October 3, 2007

I agree with the other folks that have said stop whining over ipod. Good God, what is wrong with you people? Firstly, the review is about the show, not the technology to watch it so stick to the point of the review. Secondly, get a life already. If the biggest problem you have in life is whining about ipods and technology then you are a very lucky person indeed. Go with the flow people. If you want to watch the show because you like it, then watch it in whatever format it is available to you. Life is never easy, convenient, or fair, but the last thing you need to be upset about is your insignificant ipod. Boo Hoo with that and stick to the issue at hand which is reviewing the show. So with that being said, Heroes is awesome and don't miss it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet!

1 out of 5 stars Time Filler   September 26, 2007

I watched Heroes last season, downloading it from iTunes, and thought it was kind of fun trash. Really, a pretty bad bit of writing, extremely predictable, surviving only on the worst of human nature to always see things through to the end...even when you KNOW what the end is going to be. I am relieved that NBC/Universal decided to abandon iTunes and put their programs in an unwatchable format for Macintosh users, because it delivers me from temptation. I am surprised that Amazon has not been bright enough to INSIST that the video be cross platform. Also, I keep reading the rumor that NBC will be raising the per episode price to nearly $5, once the season gets going and people are addicted. The behavior of NBC-Universal displays why it is that the music industry is dying an ugly death.

For the people who say this should be a review of the show: Well, the show is lame and predictable, with the cuteness of Hiro being its saving grace. I downloaded every episode last season and have watched ZERO of them a second time. Most of the other shows I have bothered to buy as downloads, I watch multiple times. Heroes is the kind of pulp fiction trash that is engaging as long as you are in the moment, but it leaves nothing behind. It is time filler and nothing more. Too bad. There were things about it I found appealing and I kept rooting for it to reach its potential, but felt it failed completely to do so. When the season ended, so did my interest. Unlike Eureka, Psych, or the second season of Veronica Mars (they sure killed it the third season, losing to mooning love sagas what was once a witty, amusing show), I have not thought of Heroes at all since the season finale. My only mention of it was to discuss with my family my view that we ought not buy another season. There was not a single word of dissent.
