 A very pleasant read, espesh for the ALLRED-y converted August 1, 2008
Mike ALLRED and his cohorts (including his wife) have been pushing the limits within the confines of superhero comics for quite sometime and this book compiles 4 stories, each showcasing one character of the "Madman family". Those already familiar with said family will greatly appreciate these new adventures, perhaps mostly those of Mr. Gum and It Girl respectively. The newcomers might first enjoy previous tomes such as "Madman Gargantua" (to learn about the "origins" of the Atomics, formerly "underground beatniks") and "Madman & The Atomics" in order to fully catch up with the saga.

Fans of Mike Allred's Madman and spinoff team the Atomics will find plenty to like in this volume- the stories are fun, ginchy keen one-shots done in the finest Silver Age style. Allred himself wrote the tales, but each is by a different artist, and all of them capture the feel of the universe Allred has created in all its hyper-pop glory. In particular, with Blue Monday on indefinite hiatus, it's nice to see some more art from Chynna Clugston, who more than does justice to It Girl. (And watch for a cameo by Bleu and the gang on the last page.) The stories won't change your life, and they're not as philosophical or zany as some of Allred's work on Madman, but for fans of the series, it's definitely worth taking a look.
The reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the volume itself is a bit misleading. It's labeled as an Atomics collection, and yes, two of the four stories feature everyone's favorite former street beatniks. But fans of Allred's superhero team will find that the Crash Metro and Spaceman segments have no visible connection to the Atomics, despite the title. You can see the stories fitting into the universe Allred has created, but they don't directly or even indirectly deal with any denizens of Snap City. That's not to say they're bad, it's just that the collection might more accurately be called "The Atomics... and Friends."
Nonetheless, it's still a pretty cool bunch of stories that fans of Frank Einstein and co. will be glad to have on their shelves. Just think of it more as a few fun side-stories to fill the time while Allred was busy with other projects, rather than an integral part of the overall Madman/Atomics narrative. Enjoy!
