Amazon.com Review
This collection of children's stories is likely to enchant adults as much as it will youngsters. Filled with traditional fairytales, yarns, and fables, these are the stories that have been passed down through the generations: "Hansel and Gretel," "The Ugly Duckling," and "Red Riding Hood" to name but three. The tales have not been tailored for the sake of political correctness, or spiced up for a '90s audience. These are the unabridged works of the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, and other legendary authors from this genre. There is no room left in the book for illustrations--just page after page of classic story. --Naomi Gesinger

5 out of 5 stars I will cherish this book forever   June 7, 2004

Some of my fondest (and only) memories of early childhood are of being read to by my mother from this book. All of the classics are here, including the Grimm fairy tales. The stories are absolutely wonderful, and they will hold a place in your (or your child's) heart for as long as you live.

2 out of 5 stars Good stories but...   December 14, 2006

As this is a children's book, I was quite surprised and disappointed that it contains no illustrations whatsoever. The type is also very uninspired. These stories can be found in books that are much more collectable and fun to look at as well as read. As a collector of fairy tales, Maerchen, and other stories, I was not very impressed.

5 out of 5 stars The Classics at their very best!   January 17, 2007

If you are a parent or grandparent, childhood memories will envelop you reading these tales - maybe even to your own little one or grandchild. If you have never been able to get a taste of Children's Story Tales - then give this book a try, it won't disappoint you. Written in the older style and language, just adds to it's charm and to the imagination.

Snow-White & Rose Red, Hansel & Grettel, The Sleeping Beauty In The Wood, and many, many other's to enjoy all in one book. A gift for any child, or adult, to truly appreciate some of the best classics of tales once told.

4 out of 5 stars Great stories, but not necessarily for kids   January 11, 2008
This is a wonderful collection of classic children's tales. It's got EVERYTHING.

However... the downside is that there are no illustrations, and the stories are not updated for modern times (this is good AND bad I think) so they can be brutally violent and the language is not always easy to understand for kids especially.

I don't necessarily recommend this book as a book to read stories to your children from - my 3 year old isn't much interested in it mainly due to no pictures, but I also tone down the graphic violence a little myself when I read to him (not sure if it really matters but it's my personal preference for him).

You can however read and/or remember the stories yourself using this collection and then tell them the stories in your own words - he loves it when I do that, and it is certainly a rich source book.
