Sure To Be Your Child's Favorite! August 23, 2007 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Originally tucked inside David Mack's long running comic book master piece, Kabuki, The Shy Creatures is presented here in its entirety in this beautiful children's hardcover. The illustrations and rhyme scheme will remind parents of Doctor Seuss and Maurice Sendak classics, while young readers will appreciate the underdog heroine and her band of imaginary, mythological and cryptozoological friends. Every child is sure to laugh out loud at the Yeti's grooming which results in a poodle cut or the Chupa Cabra who receives a new smile courtesy of some seriously huge dentures! I allowed my daughter to read the comic book presentation of this story and she asked for it 3 nights running. Full of imagination, laughs and a little shy girl you'll all root for, this is destined for classic status, an excellent bed time story that will send your children off to sleep with a smile.
Every child will love this book October 31, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
The shy girl in this picture book wants to be a doctor when she grows up, but not just any doctor. She wants to be a doctor that cares for creatures who are too shy to be seen by normal people.
If Big foot stubs his toe, she wants to be the one who cares for him, or if the unicorn breaks his horn, she'll tape it together. The Lock Ness Monster wouldn't be afraid of her, nor would all sorts of mystical creatures.
People who are shy--or know a very shy child--will appreciate this book. It's humorous, has interesting, colorful illustrations including pen-and-ink, watercolor and collage.
The Shy Creatures is good for any age or grade, though it reads at a level for a very young child. My five-year-old enjoyed it. This would make a beautiful gift for your favorite child, shy or not.
Armchair Interviews says: Nice gift for that special child.
What classic children's book used to be like August 29, 2007 I must say before I write this review that I'm a fan of David Mack's work. I was nervous that if I didn't like this book I would have to lie to him and say I did. There is no need to lie, this book was enjoyed by my whole family. I wish you the best of luck in your new direction, no mater where it may lead David. We really loved the new book. My daughter made me read it three times in a row, that ranks up there with her Disney books. That's high praise. Best of luck....

A beautiful, funny book. David does a great reading of it on a bonus feature of the DVD "The Alchemy of Art: David Mack".
Very Cute October 6, 2008 How my ratings work: 5 - I really liked/loved it 4 - I liked it 3 - Could've been better/worth a look 2 - Just didn't live up to the potential 1 - Simply aweful
I had the privelage of meeting David Mack at a comic book convention yesterday, he's a very friendly guy, and this is a very cute and sweet book. I think it'll speak to little kids who love mythical creatures and who may suffer from shyness as well. It may not become a literary children's classic, but I really feal that kids will love this book.
