Honestly? From the perspective of pure literary merit, this is one of the worst works of fiction I've ever read. The plot was inconsistent, the character development non existent, and I'm still blown away by how anyone remotely intelligent could compare Brad Thor to Dan Brown.
From a political perspective, Thor's effort at providing an alternate history didn't even come close to being believable and playing on the ignorance of the general US public is just pathetic. My advice to everyone out there who has read this book or plans on reading this book: please read; "Just How Stupid Are We?: Facing the Truth About the American Voter."
Our collective ignorance and Brad Thor's effort to play upon that ignorance has allowed him to make money off a book that is just plain awful. I still can't believe that anyone published this book, but it's not surprising when the most powerful people in our beautiful country are as ignorant as the people that elected them.
Again, please read "Just How Stupid Are We?: Facing the Truth About the American Voter" before you even bother reading this.

I heard Brad Thor being interviewed on the radio, taking about how George Bush wasn't the first Western leader to go to war against Islam, The French nobles combined with the English Crusaders and Spanish Christians went to war and sacked Jerusalem more times than historians can remember. The City of Jerusalem has been the cause of religous wars since time was recorded, and continues to do the same thing now. I was intrigued by the publics lack of historical knowledge in their response to the interview. Needless to say, by the time the interview was over, I wanted to read the book. I write a series of fitional novels about Islamic Terrorism, and terrorism in general, called the `Soft Target` series. As a witness to an IRA bombing in Warrington England the subject terrifies me.
Mr. Thor said in the interview that even though the main character is reoccurring, his books are all really written as stand alone novels. On the back of this one I have a lot of reading to do, it`s excellent.
Taking Mr. Thor at his word, I decided to give his book a try and I enjoyed this book immensely. I bought it the day it came out, finished it during the night.
Way back when, Mohammed had one final revelation for the Koran, but was assassinated before it was revealed. If it gets out the course of history will be changed and maybe not for the better, at least that's what some really bad people think. Scot's job, of course, find the secret. Bad guys job, of course again, stop Scot.
And where is this secret? Well there's clues out there. One buried in Thomas Jefferson's copy of DON QUOXITE. It seems Cervantes once had been a prisoner of the Barbary pirates. So we read along as Scot races along to find the clues and find the secret and while we're immersed in Scot's world we learn a bit of history, like why the Marines are called leathernecks, why they have that verse in their song "To the shores of Tripoli." Having served in the Marine Corps, I knew the answer to that last one, but you know, I never did know about that leathernecks thing. The Marines in 1815 had collors made of leather on their uniforms to protect themselves from the scimitars the Muslim's used, seems they wanted to keep their heads and if you want to fill your head with a some good escapist reading, you won't be sorry you picked up this book.

Brad Thor has done it again. As if "Blowback," his previous utter failure about Islam (not to be confused with Chalmers Johnson's excellent non-fiction book of the same name), was not bad enough, he decided to top it with something even dumber. Scot Harvath is back again in this jingoistic thriller, and yes, he is the "ideal American hero for a post-9/11 world"- and by that I mean he, and the author, are complete idiots. They both love America's policies just to death and share the same stupid ideas about terrorism as most Americans today. I could go on all day about how misguided this book is (a total free-fall from the beginning of his career), but instead I will merely leave you with a quote from the prequel to this latest debacle: "Not all Muslims are terrorists, but without fail all terrorists are Muslims." Yeah, he really said that. He can't possibly mean ALL terrorists- I mean, no one actually believes THAT. Maybe he just meant SUICIDE terrorists. In that case he is just as stupid as the rest of the American public. The number one suicide terrorist organization in history was the Marxist, atheist Tamil Tigers from Sri Lanka. Anyone who even spent a couple minutes with a book on the subject should know better.
PS: His big plot secret is a bust, too.

The only reason I bought this book is because Glenn Beck compared it to The Da Vinci Code. What an insult to Dan Brown. That's like comparing apple cider vinegar to a fine expensive vintage red wine. This has got to be one of the worst books I have ever read. I wondered why Glenn Beck would recommend this book; and then I read the acknowledgments. Quote: One of the greatest rewards of my career has been getting to meet people whom I deeply respect and admire. As I have gotten older, I realize that outside my military, law enforcement, and intelligence contact there aren't many people who both "talk the talk" and "walk the walk" as well. Glenn Beck is definitely one of those people. When you have a friend who sets the BAR so high for himself, it is impossible not to constantly strive to raise your own even high. Thank you for everything my friend. You have been an inspiration." Well, pour Glenn another drink at that high BAR and get him a higher stool -- he must be off the wagon! Can I get my money back? If anyone wants to read this book, please don't buy it. Check it out of your library. Buy some gas for your car instead. It is trash!

Mr. Thor seems to have departed from his previously successful plotlines and transformed his hero into a treasure-hunter akin to those in The DaVinci Code and National Treasure. It's apparently just not enough to scribe an anti-terrorist hero anymore, so he adds a hidden-secret treasure-hunt to go with the mayhem. The female characters are once again sidelined and there's not much in the way of revelations or interpersonal anything. Having said that, it's a decent read in terms of style and flow, but I certainly wish he would go back, read his first two books and see how much his work has deteriorated from their excellence.
