Blood Noir, abrided audio June 22, 2008 1 out of 8 found this review helpful
Today is the audio book Blood Noir by Laurell Hamilton, it was abridge.
I am reviewing this because (1)I got it,(2) I listen to it, even if by accident, my vision is getting pretty bad. So when I ordered it from amazon, I did not notice that it was (audio book) in fine print. One of my pet peeves in college was lectures, I mean if they wanted me to learn something why did the not put it in the book? I have always been a visually oriented person. So now I am going blind I am fighting it with special software, magnifying glasses and anything to improve my sight. I really have never thought of audio books, so I got this one and for a week it set there. Finally I was all caught up on the internet, and had nothing else to do, so I put the first disc in the player. There were 6 disc with 96 tracks on each disc and just like I expected from reading excerpts on her web site the first 40 tracks are audio porn. GAG a maggot this is bad enough reading it, but now it was like listening to telephone sex!! I really started skippping till I got to a part where there was some of the story.
I was good go then, I have since gone to my Border Book and Music stores and browsed the book to see what was left out, remember I said abridge at the beginning.
Only a few minor things ones that in the book acts as filler more than story. She did a good job, and that means both of them the author and the reader. I do dislike the fact that trying to keep Anita down at our level means that she has a memory problem, here's her best friend is dying of multiple wounds. The best she can do is call 911 and rush him to the hospital!
We have been here before, and she has heal multiple of her friends with sex. She is the enforcer of the wolf pack she can call the spirit of the pack and use it to heal any member. So why is she rushing Jason to the hospital? Maybe because she does not want to have to explain how she does this, when did she acquired this ablitiy. This is an ongoing problem for me. In each book she learns more about what she can do. I mean in one she was about to use her mystical necromance ablities to rip the heart out of a vampire that was more then a thousand year old. In the next book she lets a minor vampire knock her around. Why? Maybe because it would taken explanation that a new reader would not know, fooey on them they can go back and read the whole series, so she can use all her powers! I hope someone ask Laurell Hamilton about this.
But for old reader of her, it good, just get pass the manatory 12% worth of porno and yeah do good.
Oh, sidebar, I saw a youtube of a signing she did in St. Louis. She got security now, but she was asked was there interest in making her books into a movie? Her answer was that her agent advise her not to coment on that yes or no. Next question, which books, Anita or Merry was being considered? Her answer both. Do they even read these in Hollywood she ask, I mean if you take the pornography out there's nothing left.

Thats it see you later with my next review.
I tried to finish it but couldn't May 27, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I gave the book 3 stars as I feel I should be fair as I didn't finish the book. I borrowed a copy from the library as I wasn't sure after the last 6 if I wanted to spend money on this book. Im glad I didn't as it was a very hard slog for me just to get to chapter 10.
I think the author is writing the series as she wants to and its her right to do that but I must say I just don't feel much interest any more.
The main character for me, Anita, is not a person Im interested in reading about anymore. So many of the other characters to me in the Anitaverse are more interesting but they get no air time or very little. If I have to read about one more phone conversation between Anita and JC I'll scream. I want them together, holding each other and gently brushing their lips against each other in a passionate but love filled embrace. Not going to happen I guess. Asher, Damian, Requiem, Dolf, Edward, Zawaloski (sp?), raising zombies, etc are gone with the wind. The only time most men appear in the series is to have sex with Anita and Im sooooooooooooooooooooooooo over the ardure.
Seriously it was an interesting story plot point but if it was a horse it would have been flogged to death. What I would give for a story without it featuring! I also desperately miss the romance of the series which has been absent for sometime.
My other comment would be that the characters all feel like they don't have a life away from Anita. I get no sense of their hopes, dreams, everyday lives, loves, interests or anything. In this book we do get to see more about Jason but it doesnt work for me. I'd love to hear more about Anita living with all her guys and just the mundane day to day stuff of cleaning a house etc. Silly I know.
That said I still hold out hope that one day this great universe of characters and the world LKH has created will come back to life again!
On the Rise? July 22, 2008 1 out of 12 found this review helpful
After the tragedy that was Danse Macabre, The Harlequin was a step up, and Blood Noir is yet again better. The greatness of the series that was Anita Blake ended at Obsidian Butterfly, but what has been the last six or so books is still brilliant writing, even if the plot is dying/dead. Character development is still arguably there and I do still enjoy the characters, but I badly miss the days with RPIT, and, of course, less sex. I did enjoy this episode, but the novel didn't seem to properly end. Hamilton has begun, it seems, to do to this series what she does to Merry Gentry, and that is end the book without actually ending it. There is a difference between the end of a book and the end of a chapter. Merry Gentry seems to be a string of chapters, which makes each book difficult to remember and distinguish from each other, but Anita Blake had a beginning, a middle, and an end. Until recently, that is. It's great that Hamilton experiments and develops her style, but readers expect a level of consistency, and Anita Blake doesn't have that anymore.
somewhat disappointed July 22, 2008 1 out of 10 found this review helpful
It seems that these have gotten so complicated. There have been so many characters introduced over the series of these books that I have found it disappointing the author left most of them out. Still the books are awesome and I hope they continue for a long time.
good read August 10, 2008 1 out of 17 found this review helpful
I almost didn't buy this book because of the bad reviews. Ms. Hamilton writes in a flawless manner. I can never put her books down and find myself trying to slow down so I can savor the book. This does not happen with most authors. I'm glad I got it and can't wait for the next one.
