2 out of 5 stars I'm a casual comics reader ... disappointed   February 15, 2008

I was given a $100 gift card to Amazon, so I splurged and purchased this book without knowing the author's work (I know he created Sin City, but never read it), without knowing its significance in terms of how it impacted comics from this point on, etc. I'm judging this purely in terms of how much I enjoyed it as a long time Batman fan BUT casual comic reader. I didn't like it at all. First, the story arc was disappointing ... I didn't feel that it best represented Bruce Wayne's character at an advanced age. There were some interesting story elements for sure, but the quality of the writing was a huge disappointment and the artwork -- both the drawing and the coloring -- was really bad. I know it was supposed to be stylized and such -- and there are glimpses of brillance, like the front cover for example -- but panel to panel it was difficult to enjoy. If you're a die hard Frank Miller fan, I'm sure you see things quite differently and perhaps this isn't the best representation of his work. This title simply didn't resonate with me.

4 out of 5 stars Cost to damn much.   January 27, 2007

The first one was great. The second one...I think that Frank Miller read "Kingdom Come" and said "I can do better!".

Only problem is. He didn't.

Once Amazon dropped their discount this is no longer worth it. Buy it if you love Frank Miller but buy it somewhere else.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely AWESOME!   December 26, 2006

Got this as a gift for Christmas. Had already read The Dark Knight Returns nearly 15 years ago and loved it. This edition is the way it was meant to be presented. The supplemental preliminary sketches and artwork is also an excellent addition. While Dark Knight Strikes again is a fun addition to the pack, Dark Knight Returns is BY FAR the better novel. Any fan of Batman should have this, and a MUST HAVE for collectors.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.   December 30, 2006

Pretty amazing volume. It's got both The Dark Knight Returns and The Dark Knight Strikes Again, but you know this if you are reading the reviews. It's an oversized volume on thick paper stock w/over 30 pages of sketches, preliminary art work, photos, etc. which is a real treat.

3 out of 5 stars Half good, half ordinary   January 15, 2007

I can distinctly remember the pleasure I had reading the original Return of the Dark Knight issues way, way back. A massive, high quality volume like Absolute Dark Knight is fitting for a such body of work. Sadly, the second part is _much_ less interesting in most respects.
