Simply excellent January 11, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I believe enough praise has been heaped upon the Sandman series, so I will speak only about this edition.
The book is superbly printed, on thick, glossy paper, on which every color and letter stands out. The binding is very high quality as well, beside having an embossed spine, and a overall 'arcane' look. It looks great, and it's very pleasant to hold in the hands. The cloth bookmark and the slipcase are also welcome. For its price, it's a great value.
I've read the older 10 volume edition, and the new colorings are really a blast. The originals never had such crisp, live colors, and with the pages being about one third larger than those of the older edition, you really feel you're sucked into the book.
You also get lots of extras, including some very cool Sandman images and the full script of Midsummer Night's Dream, though unfortunately it's not annotated by Neil, as the script of Calliope from the original edition was. Still, it's fun to read, and with all the other goodness, you can't really complain, can you?
So, highly recommended!
At long last January 16, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
These stories deserved such a high quality format. The reading pleasure is definitely enhanced by the overall package quality. It's quite enjoyable when a book that costs a lot is really worth it.

Absolute Masterpiece April 16, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Comprising Sandman numbers 1 to 20, the Absolute Sandman, Vol. 1 is the first of four oversized, slip-cased hardcover books that will reprint Neil Gaiman's Sandman completely (all 75 numbers, plus some extras). That alone would be highly recommended, but this book has also a new coloring, aproved my Neil himself, plus a new introduction by Paul Levitz, forewords by Gaiman, a copy of the script with sketches for Sandman #19 (A Midsummer Night's Dream) and also sketches from Gaiman and Michael Dringenberg on the Sandman proposal to DC back in the 80s. Ah, and also all 20 covers from Dave McKean.
All of this would mean nothing if the book wasn't really good, and really good it is. Here you'll read the capture of the Lord of the Dreams and his comeback (early collected in "Preludes and Nocturnes"), his encounter with the deadly nightmare "The Corinthian" (previously collected in "The Doll's House), and four short stories from the past of Dream (as seen before in "Dream County" collection). Many great moments from the series are here: the confrontation in Hell with demons over his helmet, the serial killer convention, the encounter with his sister Death, and the already mentioned A Midsummer Night's Dream, the first and only comic book to win a World Fantasy Award.
This book is a work of art, and high recommended. Can't wait to have the 4 of them on my bookshelf!
Awesome! October 20, 2006 I got mine in the mail yesterday and it was my first exposure to "Sandman". I loved it and will get the other volumes as well.
I would suggest, however, that you flip through your copy. Mine had a torn page about half-way through so I've had to send it back for a replacement.
That aside, this book looks great and the stories are fantastic. It will go on the shelf beside "Watchmen" and "Sin City" as my favorite Graphic Novels.
