Darwyin Cook does what few artist/writers even attempt: Relish in the good old days of not only comic books, but sci-fi as well. Besides All-Star Superman, i find it hard to find retro-themed dc books, but this one doesn't disappoint. Cooke's style is clean and classic, but his characters are interesting and profound. The oversized edition is a must!

The art is truely fantastic. If you are a Darwyn Cooke fan than this is probably the book for you. The "absolute treatment" really serves to enhance the art work.
The story was disapointing. I had planned to sit down and read this in one or two sittings. Instead it took me maybe ten (ie it didn't hold my interest). The story jumped around and many of the characters were obscure ones that all but the most hard core DC fans knowledgable in the golden age would be unfamiliar with.
If you enjoy stories about DC comics past may I suggest (1) Mark Waid's JLA Year One or (2) Alan Davis's JLA The Nail.
In summary a disappoiting read with some truly fantastic art. Was it worth it? I don't know.

The New Frontier is amazing. But Amazon sent me a damaged copy and tried to tell me it was damaged in shipping. The return address was from the AMAZON RETURN CENTER. Obviously Amazon tried to sell me a damaged book that had already been returned, and pass it off as new. FRAUD! If this were only a one time incident, I could deal with it, but they did the exact same thing to my girlfriend last summer. She ordered Jinx by Brian Michael Bendis and when it came it looked like a 3rd grader had tried to glue it together. It literally fell apart the moment she opened it. They told her the same thing they told me, even though the return address was again from the AMAZON RETURN CENTER. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. I can no longer support a company that's policy is to perpetrate FRAUD against the American people.

darwyn cooke is a fairly good artist, and a terrible writer. this is a story with cameos from most of the dc big guns, but is mainly a hal jordan and martian manhunter story. the first part of the new frontier is ok and might have been redeemed by part 2; sadly this didn't happen as the second part goes completely off the rails and is totally awful. a very overrated work.

Not that Cooke's artwork copies Toth's, but it has the same feeling. Understated clean art, with great style mixed in! Story is told in a classic tone and delivers a sense of the promise of the 1960's new frontier, even with mankinds failures mixed in. Well done!
