Do you Believe? August 14, 2005 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
The problem with knowing that a movie has a surprise ending is that you end up focussed on trying to guess what that ending is to demonstrate to yourself how smart you are.
Luckily for me I didn't know much about this movie before going to see it. I expected a horror film but ended up getting a suspense thriller, with an ending that I didn't expect.
The film is a little creepy, not much horror. Good acting and very interesting. Worth seeing.
Long, boring and does not have a great ending! November 27, 2005 4 out of 14 found this review helpful
I rented this movie because lot of the reviewers said that even though this movie does drag on a bit, but has a great and shocking ending. So, I watched the whole movie and here's my review. By the way, the movie is long and boring.
Spoilers!
1. The old man who could craw out of the roof and also write "Help Me" on the bed sheet could not have written out what happened to the lady help to warn her?
2. The girl escapes out from the old lady by rolling a boat out on to the river, but once she reaches the land, she does not go straight to the police to get that old man out of that weird place even though the lady had a gun and was shooting at her as she ren out of that place, and she hid the old man and was scared for his safety. Once she reached the land, she ran straight to that lawyer and told him what happend.
3. The lady help pushed the old lady off from the top of the stairs and breaking her legs, but the old lady manages to drag herself up the stairs very quickly, and was able to move a long heavy looking mirror with both arms.
4. The lady help could ran out of the house when the old lady and her son was chasing her, but instead she ran up the stairs.
5. The lady help could have jumped out of her way out of the circle she drew, or at least get out of the way when that old lady pushed the mirror towards her, but she stood still (I tell you this went on for a long time).
Don't waste your money!
talented cast and director wasted on this film January 4, 2006 4 out of 8 found this review helpful
The acting and direction of Skeleton Key are high quality. The story line is not.
Something is wrong in a bayou home, where Kate Hudson's character cares for an invalid man. It seems 'hoodoo' is at work, and souls such as his, are either being entrapped, or tortured, or something.
Hudson is hot stuff on the bayou, and John Hurt (!) has a creepy bit part as the invalid/hoodoo victim. This cannot save the film however, as films require an interesting plot, and development of empathy with its characters. What I cannot forgive, is the lack of CCR's 'Born on the Bayou' on the soundtrack.
A enjoyable movie made in the grand old gothic mystery tradition. April 16, 2006 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is one intelligent mystery made in the grand old gothic tradition.
Ahhh the sweet young innocent heroine played by Kate Hudson. Throw in a creepy little southern mansion located around New Orleans, mix in a disabled old man and his seemingly eccentrical wife, add in a couple of slave's ghosts, stir in a hidden room, some summer rain with lightening, thunder and voodoo and you have the basis for this excellent mystery.
You know there's something not quite right but you can't put your finger on it.
Maxine Barnett plays Mama Cynthia and Ronald McCall played Papa Justify and although these two superb actors didn't have very many lines they both added and made the impossible seem believable.
I don't want to say too much because it might ruin the ending however I found this movie fantastic because it is a real intelligent thriller that didn't have to resort to the silly, obnoxious gore fest Hollywood is commonly churning out now days.
I can't say which spooked me more, the ending or the overall mysterious old southern atmosphere that permeates throughout the entire movie.
The camera work is excellent, with its play on shadows and light - most people don't notice how drastically the camera work influences the "atmosphere". In this movie you feel the atmosphere like sitting outside on a hot southern afternoon, it quietly and yet completely sneaks into every single pore.
All the actors are top notch. The lines and the writing were very well done. Iain Softley really knew what he was doing as a director with this movie.
This was a very interesting, entertaining and a most enjoyable 104 minutes.
A Great Plot Twist That Will Keep You Guessing Until... May 29, 2006 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I don't want to go into a lot of detail here because like "The Sixth Sense" there is a point toward the end of this film when the observant viewer will realize what's really happening here. And if you are really paying attention you willfigure it out perhaps a little earlier than what was intended by the director, but that's ok. I don't want to spoil the fun for you so I won't elaborate.
This film is beautifully shot and acted - especially John Hurt who doesn't get to speak. How challenging is that? Skeleton Key is full of dark, cypress tree, hoodoo, alligator Louisiana bayou mystery. My wife wanted to see it and I was actually sort of "ok, whatever" when she picked this up to rent. After seeing Skeleton Key I purchased a copy and I don't buy very many movies on DVD.
As far as critics who panned this movie go, don't let them put you off. My guess is the production team didn't hand out really nice goody-bags at the theatrical pre-release party. That's the ONLY explanation for a bad review because this really is a very good movie.
