So much more than the Taliban December 20, 2008 First of all, let me say I loved this book. I also may have cried more during this book than any other. But the reviews on the cover, and many I've read here keep using phrasing like "triumphing over the Taliban" "Under Taliban rule", ect. Personally, I feel that is missing the point. Mariam's mistreatment began way before the Taliban came to rule, which is actually a relatively short portion of the entire book. To me, it was more about people (usually men, but not always) selfishly preserving their place and privileges by putting anyone "less" than them down. I feel this is really Hosseini's message, that people should not let their pride and selfishness allow them to mistreat another, even if the actions are condoned by their culture, religion, or government. On a light note, I was fascinated by the Kabulites obsession with the movie "Titanic", and Googled the subject and found many interesting articles chronicling this phenomena. Jack and Rose Triumph Over the Taliban!
eyeopener December 29, 2008 this was so well written. i was so amazed @ the things that happened in my lifetime.
Amazing story about the struggle of Afghan women to live a 'normal' life December 29, 2008 Hosseini's second book is as good as his first. In this book he takes us along to witness the hard realities of life in Afghanistan through the eyes of two women trying to lead normal lives. Something as simple as loving and being loved back is not so easy in certain societies and certain times. The novel starts prior to the USSR's invasion of Afghanistan and ends in a post 9/11 world. The story is sad, but it is so well written that you'll have a hard time putting the book down. There are many themes in the book, but two strong ones are hope and perseverance.
