The quilters kitchen October 5, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I love all the books. it was just to short. Would have liked to read more on how the kitchen was finialized.
Disappointed October 7, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I have enjoyed all the books in the series but was disappointed in this book. Like another, I found too little content in here. It is if I was dropped in to witness a conversation and was removed before anything happened.
A short story, interrupted by recipes October 11, 2008 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
Like other reviewers, I too was eager for the release of the next installment of the Elm Creek Quilts series. While this one is quite short, serving as a mere appetizer while we wait for the next full book to arrive in Spring 2009, I was not entirely disappointed. There's no doubt that the items and vignettes that surface here will show up in subsequent scenes.
Anna became the quilt camp cook in the last episode, and Elm Creek matron Sylvia Bergstrom Compton has wisely followed the new chef's advice for updating the mansion's kitchen. Here Anna and Sylvia go through and empty all of the cupboards in order to make way for the demolition and renovation. What treasures they find! And what stories they remind Sylvia of! We are given even more tidbits to the property's history in these pages.
If you skip over the recipes, yes, the text of the story will take you less than an hour to read. But it may tide you over until we can meet up with the whole Elm Creek gang again.
Pleasant novella with many recipes October 15, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Anna Del Maso is the new chef at Elm Street Quilts. Her new boss, Sylvia Compson, promised that Anna could re-do the old kitchen as a condition of her employment, and that is what occurs in this short book. The two women work in the kitchen, cleaning out the cupboards in preparation for the remodeling. As they pull out pots, pans, serving dishes, aprons, and table cloths, Sylvia reminisces about how each of these items fit into her family's past. Following each section is a number of recipes which are relevant to some occasion which occurred in the house in the past. Be aware that there are more recipes than text, and then enjoy this story which explores Sylvia's past and Anna's future.
Don't waste your money! October 21, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
What a let-down after eagerly awaiting the next book in this series. It should be advertised as a cookbook, not a novel! I will definitely not be taken in again like this and pre-order a book this expensive before having reviews to read. I am in total agreement with the other 95% of the reviews on this one. I can still hardly believe the content and am definitely disappointed in J. Chiaverini. This has been an expensive lesson for me as I have always been able to trust an author whose previous books I have enjoyed. A few recipes do add a nice touch, in my opinion. But this was definitely NOT a few recipes. The actual story content was a read worth only a few minutes. I feel like writing the publisher about this rip-off! Unless you collect cookbooks, SKIP THIS ONE.
