A Front Row Seat May 10, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
Michael Yon has been giving great dispatches from this front for years and his book takes it to a whole new level. Alongside the men of our armed forces in small teams, Yon is able to get a front row seat for the courageous battles, subtle diplomacy and true scenes of bravery. Only a former Green Beret would actually participate in the battle he is writing about. Its about time someone talked about the magnificent job that our brothers and sisters are doing in an incredibly difficult situation. Thank you, Michael, from all of us.
Reality Revealed May 12, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is one of the few citizen journalists whom I will grant any credibility, and he has written a supurb book. He does not write so people will agree or disagree with him. I disagreed with him about the civil war in Iraq which he says started a year before anyone took notice. That is not his concern. The FACTS on the ground are his concern, and that is what he writes about in this book.
When you wrote about the successes, the losses, the children, the living and the dieing, you had me in smiles and tears and awe. Especially when you wrote about the times you'd see 'that look' on our mens faces after losing a brethren. How awful! We must not let them down.
It may amaze many people who have only watched TV to get their news, but we are actually winning over in the Iraq theater!
You may also read Michael's reports on his website, [...]. He is an incredible writer, and this book just esteems this fact. It seems to have written itself. That is because Michael makes it appear so easy. Trust me, it is not.
I'm grateful we have someone who is willing to go over there on his own (without any financial backing) seeking the truth as his only agenda, instead of having a closed mind either way. Thank you, Michael Yon. I love the book, even though it is emotional for me. Excellent job.
Finally an unbiased account of the recent happenings in Iraq July 9, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
While I wish the Iraq war had never happened and personally think it was the biggest favor we could ever do for Iran, I also want to know what is truly happening and not have it filtered from either a right wing or left wing bias. I found this to be a tremendously interesting book. Yon is rightfully critical of the original war planners as being totally unprepared for an insurgency, but tells vivid first hand accounts of how the war is actually now being won. More importantly, he portrays the amazing heroism of the soldiers and leaves you stunned at their courage. He even has pictures of actual battles backing up his accounts. It seems like the turning point was putting General Petreus in command and getting rid of the bozos before him. If anyone is interested in an account of the last year in Iraq which will really give you info you never hear, then I really recommend the book. Even if you are anti-war, it is must reading.
Unfortunately the Iraqi Government Doesn't Care April 20, 2008 4 out of 43 found this review helpful
The skill and sacrifice of our troops are documented beyond dispute (though I know of no actual dispute on that subject) in this book. That is vitally important because we should not lose touch with their greatness. Unfortunately, the Iraqi government does not follow up. Their sacrifice will never lead to victory if the Iraqis do not (after 5 years get off the sidelines and take control of their own destiny politically and militarily. The Bush Administration's failure to make them do this and continuous subsidization of their failure (while their government wallows in surplus and ours in deficit) makes a mockery of the sacrifices of these brave men and women and sets up a situation where another generation of our children will die because the Iraqis see no reason to have their children take our place.
Turn off the TV May 15, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
People need to turn off the TV and read this book before turning it back on. Michael Yon has written the most objective assessment of our actions in Iraq. His "on the ground" observations skewer people of all political stripes. Michael writes a narrative that is very descriptive and shows the conflict warts and all. His analysis of Iraq is spot on. He has shown that we have the second "greatest generation" now serving in the military.
