It was four men against 100 plus Taliban supporters, but the mission was to take out the terrorist responsible for inventing the IEDs that have claimed the lives of thousands of Americans and our allies. He was well protected, or was he?

I heard about this book on christian radio one day as I drove to work. I listen mostly to the songs and sometimes I tune out in the mornings when they mostly talk which was what they were doing the morning they were interviewing Marcus Luttrell who was one of the 4 Navy Seals involved in this mission upon the mountain, but this time I kept the radio going. Wow, what a story, I thought, and boy did I want to read it. The book was hard to get from the public library because all the copies were checked out. So, I finally got a copy and it was another personal reading record for me. This book was very hard to put down.

You don't get to this story until the last half of the book, only after you can understand the training and sacrifice that the men go through that become SEALS. And after learning the week of hell Marcus lived through in and around the mountain at the Afghani border to Pakistan, can you begin to understand the hell week the SEALS must go through before they pass muster. The SEALS were told to get wet and sandy during boot camp, never to get dry and smelly like they got in Afghanistan. I recently asked an army officer who was off duty temporarily and had been sent to Afghanistan what it was like over there. One of his first replies was that it was smelly. He didn't explain why, just that he'd been to a lot more interesting places in his 10 plus years of service. No doubt he must have accidentally stumbled into the communal latrines or open pits that are directly adjacent to their dwelling places that Marcus had the misfortune of falling into. I laughed at what Marcus told one of his instructors, who came to see him when he was first rescued. His instructor who had no doubt screamed and shot fake bullets at him during hell week, asked him what he could do for him. That whatever he wanted, or needed, he would do it for him. Marcus replied "I want a cheeseburger", and then started sobbing for the first time since his friends were killed. (I've backpacked before in a strange country for 2 weeks and afterwards was craving the taste of a regular coca cola, not diet like I usually get. So I could kind of relate.) It's superhuman though what those guys achieve and put themselves through, seems they give it 2000 per cent.

Marcus explains also in the book how close the SEALS work as a team and how close the men get as a result. Of course, that amplifies a thousandfold the hurt and loss they feel when their buddies die on the field. This book I just can't recommend enough. It will make you want to exercise, love your country, love the guys who are fighting the terrorists who attacked us and who still want to hurt us, love our troops, and make you appreciate President Bush for his love of our troops and how he sincerely wants to defend our country from lawless attackers. I can't believe I just said that, but I mean every word of it. I've never been a Bush fan, but lately the Democrats have been greatly disappointing me. But I'll have to save that ammo for another review...

The story of the villagers protecting Marcus made me really begin to understand the Afghanis' predicament. They're muslim and their village gets overrun by these Taliban thugs who know perfectly well the terrain there is a great hideout. Poor Afghanis. Imagine how they live their, on average, 43 years of existence. "Taliban, taliban, run Marcus". How could he, if you understand how shot up he was. Or it could be, "The Russians are coming, the Russians are coming, run comrade, run", 30 years ago having many of their limbs blown off their bodies.

I have to say that being a christian and reading this true story is inspirational in that it seems that G-d was at work in this messy situation as Marcus and the other SEALS practically jumped off the mountain dodging the sudden onslaught of RPGs, and AK47's from the Taliban. His rifle stayed with him the whole time, and the protection the Afghanis gave him was miraculous in so many ways, and all that time he was presumed dead by his family, people were at his home, praying for him, for many, many days. "Hands lifted up", I've told you before in another review, "smash more battalions than hands that strike". (Patton quoting Bosuet).

Great book for a book club, my sister's thinking of getting her book club to read this. It's really, really good stuff.

Yes, Marcus, "G-d bless Texas"!

As a veteran I have a natural great respect for our military and even more so for our 'silent warriors'. What Luttrell does in this book to the fallen SEALs is shameful. The constant bashing of the 'liberal media' and recurring 'I love Texas' and `Texans are the greatest' themes leave a bad taste in my mouth. BUDs training is well documented and I can imagine that anyone who reads this book would know or be familiar with most of what he speaks about with regard to his training. He does not seem to know much about tactical military procedures and his writing style is so poor it makes the book almost unreadable. I commend his service but found the book appalling on many levels.

I can't believe the arrogance of this guy. Poorly written. If you want to ready a great book about a true hero, read David Hackworth's About Face. Not this trash. This book has probably done more to tarnish the image of the Navy Seals than anything ever written.

I found this story to be a chilling reminder of the cost of war and how one side is willing to fight the war and the other....while being more then able to win this war...is not willing to do what is necessary to fight this war. Our grandparents of WWII are known as the greatest generation that ever lived. Mainly becuase of the sacrifices that they were willing to go through in order to win against evil. I am afraid that if our generation is remembered at all it will be only as a footnote in history as teh generation that destroyed America as a World Power. Read your history books ladies and gentleman....Europe thought that they could talk to Hitler and reason with him as well. These people that we are fighting want only one thing....and that is the elimination of the Western Culture. To the soldiers who are fighting I say carry on and god bless. Your acts along with your mission are honorable and needed.
