Excellent Way To Diagnose Your Own Beliefs Without Feeling Dirty June 17, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Before I say anything else, please know this:
THIS BOOK IS A COMEDIC VENTURE
This was not written to attack or belittle anybody. Lewis Black is, and always has been, an angry Jewish Comedian. That's it. He is no saint, priest, rabbi, or any other title that is related to religious expertise.
That being said, the book is very funny. I read it in tandem with the audiobook, which truly added to the experience. Hearing Black read the book to you is essentially listening to a 6 hour stand-up album, without the two-drink-minimum idiots laughing in the background. Those who have paid attention to his past work will hear some recycled jokes within, but overall his insights to the "quirks" of various religions are quite funny, even to me, someone who considers himself very solid in his own faith and beliefs.
The key to enjoying this work is to have an open mind and to understand that Black is an entertainer, and in the end, his goal is to conjure a laugh from his audience (or readers). If you are easily offended by this sort of thing, by all means, DO NOT buy the book (or CD).
Overall an excellent and entertaining read, just like his last book (and cd). Worth every penny.
Never been a book about religion like this one June 23, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Comedian Lewis Black tackles religion like no other author has before. Black explores the inconsistinces of every major religion, including his own. He does this while including his brand of unique humor. This book will make you think about faith and the purpose it serves in America. If you are a fan of Black's comedy, this one is for you.
Bless You Lewis!!! July 6, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
No religion is safe in Me of Little Faith. Lewis makes it clear at the outset -- if think you might be offended, then don't read the book. He doesn't hold back anything. Lewis has the courage to write what many of us are thinking. I particularly enjoyed his chapter on Evangelists. I can't remember laughing so much, so much so that people on my train were asking what I was reading. Now I've got a list of those wanting to read it -- cheap bastards don't want to buy a copy. If you have an open mind and want another perspective on religion and most of all -- need a laugh -- then by all means read Me of Liitle Faith and enjoy. Lewis makes it clear, laughter is the key to a full life.
Hitchens, but funny. July 16, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Gentle Snowflakes,
If you enjoyed reading Christopher Hitchens' recent demolishment of world religions, "God Is Not Great," then you'll love "Me of Little Faith."
Lewis does what Hitchens did, but funnier. That says all that need be said.
Stick to Standup July 4, 2008 2 out of 7 found this review helpful
I like Lewis Black, but this book is a real disappointment. Hard to believe a book that makes fun of religion could be anything but great, but this one is rarely funny -- even at its best moments, it's only mildly amusing.
There's little depth to the writing. It's largely superficial comedy, ridiculous pseudo-scientific tales, and personal opinions of no real value. One of my biggest laughs (or was it some other emotion?) came when he described himself as perhaps the least religious person on the planet, when in fact he comes across as quite religious, just not in an organized-religion sense. Guess he forgot about all those atheists and other non-religious people.
