The Old Case Repackaged July 28, 2008 9 out of 25 found this review helpful
"The New Case Against Immigration" is not a "new case". Its arguments are based on the same fears that stopped immigration in the 1920's. In the words of Michelle Wucker author of Lockout: Why America Keeps Getting Immigration Wrong When Our Prosperity Depends on Getting It Right "they were wrong then and they are wrong now."
Krikorian's basic argument is that the immigrants are the same but that the United States has changed and therefore mass immigration has to stop. He then tries to make a case that changes in communications, travel, the need for national security, our perception of sovereignty, our need for cheap labor and the welfare state have made it impossible for the USA to continue to accept immigrants. If you oppose immigration, for whatever reason, these are arguments that give you a patina of intellectual cover. However, if you look deeply at any of them they are the same fears of immigrants repackaged.
I will give just two example of how Krikorian book distorts arguments. In his chapter on population he argues that "mass immigration is social engineering" by the federal government. "Social engineering" is an attempt to influence popular behavior. Restricting where people are allowed to live certainly affects their behavior. So it is just as easy to state that: "restricting immigration is social engineering." Which is correct? It depends where you are coming from.
In his chapter on government spending he cites studies that claim that unskilled immigrants will always be a tax burden on the nation. Yes in the same way that 30 million children will always be a tax burden. But children will grow up to contribute and so will immigrants. This flaw in the anti-immigrant argument is very well documented in Immigrants and Boomers: Forging a New Social Contract for the Future of America by Dowell Myers. The only way to study a group is to follow a cohort as it changes demographically. The studies cited by Krikorian look at immigrants as a static group.
Krikorian states the US is now a "mature nation." He wants to keep it just the way it is. In the documentary film Beyond Borders: The Debate Over Human Migration Willem Charles talks about how fear of immigrant shows an unrealistic fear of the future. The world will keep changing and people will migrate. That so many of them want to migrate here is a tribute to the American creed and the nation we have built. It should be source of immense pride for all Americans.
Required Reading July 30, 2008 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
This book should be required reading by alll policy makers. The author sets aside political correctness and writes facts and common sense. It is a well written book. I believe most of the people in the United States understand what impact immigration is having on our country and are puzzled why the policy makers think they are above it. I ended up buying this book from Amazon. I had hoped our local library would get it. The said they wouldn't, since it had received bad reviews. Do I sense a selective form of censorship on the part of the local library?
Bunch of misleading statistics and false Data July 5, 2008 6 out of 58 found this review helpful
I used to work as a statistician in an agency. As an proud American, i totally DISAGREE with Mr Krikorian's false numbers. He is a real conservative who has come up with false numbers to back up his case. We as Americans will loose our competitiveness to Asians if we don't encourage LEGAL IMMIGRATION. Thinking of our kids future, I guess people should totally reject this book and discourage people like Mark. Think about the future of our kids who have to survive here. If the Indians and Chinese start innovating like us we will lose our supremacy. Wake up people and save this country before such conservatives destroy this great nation.
Regarding the illegal immigration, I dont think its practically possible to send the millions of hispanics back. All we can try for is to improve our immigration system and its proper enforcement. Mr. Krikorian does not know/show data about how many American farmers in Utah, AZ and CA are devastated since they cannot find american workers. If we as americans cannot work as laborers we should at least support the hard working farmers by fixing our immigration systems and providing them with mexican workers LEGALLY. This book is all about one person being a frog in the well and ignoring the ocean outside. Wake up Americans otherwise the Mexicans, Indians and Chinese will overtake the world and no-one would even care about USA. God bless America.
Krikorian: A man for our times August 7, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
Mark Krikorian has taken a fresh look at the immigration conundrum and in a well-research and well-documented book has marshaled new arguments that suggest we are headed down the wrong road on both legal and illegal immigration. I have made similar but less well-reasoned arguments related to the mathematical concept of a limit: the limit of finite natural resources per capita as population grows without bounds is zero. The question therefore becomes: How far down that road do we want to go? Krikorian, the grandson of Armenian immigrants, identifies a number of differences between the nature of our country and society now and during the earlier waves of immigration that made assimilation possible then but work against it today. One of the these ideas is the transnational community. When such a community reaches a critical mass in terms of population it becomes possible for its inhabitants to live full lives without assimilating culturally and linguistically and without changing their allegiance. This is an important book that every American should read, particularly members of congress and legislatures and candidates for state and federal office. Their myopia and inaction places America in grave danger.
The Minuteman Project Strongly Recommends This Book August 8, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
There have been many books written about immigration issues, but "The New Case Against Immigration" by Mark Krikorian is the best compilation of data and observations addressing the immigration chaos that I have ever read.
The Minuteman Project strongly recommends this book to anyone seriously interested in the root causes, and the prospective solutions, to the immigration dilemma that jeopardizes the future of the United States as a sovereign, prosperous, and civilized nation.
Krikorian, the director of the Center For Immigration Studies (CIS), a Washington, DC super think tank on immigration issues, brings his years of expertise on immigration issues together in one compelling, virtual bible for both novices and pundits alike.
"The New Case Against Immigration" should be part of any U.S. history or sociology program at all secondary and post-secondary schools across the nation.
