A Superb Writer/Journalist! June 13, 2008 Recently I read Born Fighting because, like Jim Webb, I descended from some Scots-Irish in SW Virginia. I was so impressed with his research and knowledge, but more so with his writing style. His words flow there and so too in A Time to Fight, which is a tapestry of history woven with commentary about current events. His values about re-establishing fairness and justice in America are powerful and populist. He also knows how to use the language in a wonderful way, something I don't expect from US Senators. When he speaks he is measured and moderate, but I felt passion as I read. I think this man would make a great Supreme Court Justice.
AMERICA CAN DO BETTER June 14, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
An incisive, insightful indictment of our leaders. From a childhood as the son of a military man to highly decorated combat Marine to critically acclaimed author to Secretary of the Navy to Senator, Jim Webb has seen tough times up close.
He saw the war in Iraq as a mistake long before there was a war in Iraq. Occupying a country in the Middle East was and is and will be a mistake.
Webb stresses a need for economic fairness. Through no fault of their own, many in our country are not getting a fair deal.
Webb's prescription for the problems is to elect better leaders. Easily written, but not so easily done. Prescription without diagnosis is malpractice. Webb provides the diagnosis in easily-read detail and the prescription. That's a good start.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is seriously concerned about the direction of our country. A Time to Fight: Reclaiming a Fair and Just America
What happened to the mess sargeant? July 13, 2008 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
The civilianization of the military and other government functions is appalling. I't no wander we will end up paying a trillion dollars for a mercenary exercise!!! Is anyone responsible for anything? Bill Zahn, Long Beach CA
Candid assessment July 14, 2008 Like many people, I thought I knew what to expect from Jim Webb, but I was pleasantly surprised. He is far broader and a much better writer than I expected. I see now why he is being considered as a VP for Obama. He would make an excellent choice and America would be better off for it. I liked his writing style so much, I am going to read some of his other books.
Thanks: Proves That the Obamas Are Not One Of Us or Like Us August 26, 2008 0 out of 15 found this review helpful
The author, a former Republican, has unwittingly proved that Barack and Michelle Obama are neither like us nor one of us. The author's intent was to write a guidebook for the Democratic Party, and, perhaps, garner from the Democratic nominee an appointment as Vice President or cabinet secretary. But the Obamas have rejected his advice. Instead, the unintended consequence of his book is to prove that Barack Obama is not qualified to be president.
Are you like Barack Obama? Were your parents unmarried? Was your father a Muslim from Africa and your mother a hippie from America? Did your father abandon you when you were two years old? Did you grow up in Hawaii and Indonesia? Did your mother abandon you and send you to live with your white grandparents in Hawaii? Did your grandparents use their savings to send you to the best prep school in your state? Did you use hard and soft drugs? Did an Ivy League college like Columbia admit you based on a racial quota? After graduation, did you become a "community organizer" on the south side of Chicago, and register only black voters? Did an Ivy League law school like Harvard admit you on the basis of a racial quota? As a lawyer, did your work on cases that benefited blacks only? With Ivy League undergraduate and law degrees, did you listen to and financially support for 20 years the anti-white philosophy, theology, and rhetoric of a racist black minister? Did you associate with an urban terrorist who had bombed the U.S. Capitol building and was still proud of it? Did you do business with and accept campaign contributions from a man who was commiting criminal acts in Chicago? Did you travel to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan with Muslim friends? As a U.S. Senator, did you earmark public money for your wife's private employer?
Are you like Michelle Obama? Did you grow up on the south side of Chicago? Did an Ivy League college like Princeton admit you on the basis of a racial quota? Did an Ivy League law school like Harvard admit you on the basis of a racial quota? Did predominately white law firms hire and promote you on the basis of race? Having received these educational and employment privileges, did you express your hatred, disdain, and anger at American culture and values?
The fact that Barack Obama is not one of us magnifies his lack of experience to be prsident and commander-in-chief. His only experiences is as a "community organizer" on Chicago's south side and as a part time law lecturer, He deserves little credit for his service in the Illinois legislature and the U.S. Senate because he usually voted "present", not yea or nay of pending bills. He has no executive training or experience. He promises "change", but he does not provide any specifics for the voters to decide whether the "change" is good or bad. Hitler brought "change" to Germany during the 1930s, but few would argue that that "change" was good for Germany.
Michelle is also a product of the south side, a hotbed of black racism and bigotry. Her character is tainted by an intense hatred of American values and culture. She has nothing in common with Jackie Kennedy, Nancy Reagan or Laura Bush. Democrates who are besotted by Barack should think twice about permitting a hate-filled woman like Michelle to occupy the White House for four years.
Applying the author's theories to the Obamas, Barack is not qualified to be president and commander-in-chief, and Michelle is not qualified to be First Lady. The reason, according to his theory, is that they are not one of us or like us. They don't share our values and goals. Barack's jive talk on public policy proves that he is out of touch with America and Americans. And anyone who listened to Michelle's speech at the 2008 Democratic National Convention heard her reaffirm her alien values. Even Democratic leader James Carville noted that the first night speakers did not communicate a single message to the voters. Their theme was the cult of personality surrounding Barack's candidacy. Carville should have realized that there is no message, only jive talk. I assume that that was a painful night for Senator Webb. But maybe he is a Trojan Horse in the Democratic Party. In any event, it is time to fight for America and against the Obama cult of personality.
