5 out of 5 stars Jim Webb: A Man for our Time   June 23, 2008

This book provides an insight into a man who I think is destined for leadership beyond his present day position in the Senate. He is a skillful writer, a perceptive thinker, with a good grasp of history and who can connect that history to our present day needs. His honorable military service gives him invaluable experience inextricably connected to the kind of leadership sorely needed today. I am a lifelong republican who would not hesitate to vote for any party who chooses him for their national ticket. I recommend Jim Webb and his book to every thinking American.

1 out of 5 stars terrible   August 15, 2008

This book was terrible. If i wanted to buy an autobiography about a marine I would have. What I thought I was purchasing was a book describing the troubles America is facing today and possible solutions to these problems. Instead, I got a book where Jim Webb talks about himself for 200 pages and all of his accomplishments. The remaining pages, all 50 of them, are dedicated to three or four issues which I would consider important, but not the most pressing. As for solutions, he offers none. This book was terrible. If you want a more interesting book with real problems and possible solutions, get any of Ron Paul's books, even if you don't agree with him at least he lays out what the real issues are how to fix them. I cannot stress enough how terrible this book was.

5 out of 5 stars Time To Fight   June 22, 2008

Excellent statement of where Sen Webb came from and how he got to where he is today. Lays out his philosophy of what the country needs but is spare on how we are going to achieve it. Places a lot of responsibility on the "right leaders" to get us out of our predicament then charges the reader to ask political candidates tough questions such as their stance on our involvement in middle east and asian nation building, our need for a strategic vision for the US vis a vis the world, and why our prisons are so much more crowded than any other nation's (as opposed to the emotionally charged questions like flag burning, climate change and abortion rights). He seems to be asking the right questions and based on this book it would seem he has the tools and the integrity to help guide us in finding answers that will restore America's leadership and credibility among not only our own citizens but also those of the world.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book by a very knowledgeable man   June 27, 2008

Jim Webb has very impressive credentials for writing this book. He is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and subsequently served as a platoon leader in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War in which he was wounded twice and decorated for valor with the Navy Cross, the Silver Star, and two bronze Stars. Later, he served as Assistant Secretary of Defense and Secretary of the Navy in the Reagan Administration. Currently he serves as a U.S. Senator from the state of Virginia. Furthermore, he has had extensive experience as a journalist and author. In this he book has written much that is worth reading about the current state of this country and how to reclaim a fair and just America.

4 out of 5 stars important issues raised by a rising star   July 17, 2008

A Time to Fight by Jim Webb is a very good book written by the newly elected Democratic Senator from Virginia. Webb cuts a very interesting figure on the political stage-a former Republican and Reagan-era official, who changed parties due to his opposition to the Iraq war. At least thats what i thought before reading the book. Webb talks about a whole range of issues, from those that are important to the military to the unfairness of the criminal justice and the huge gap between rich and poor, the latter two which are often neglected by today's political leaders. His discussion of these issues shows he has embraced a populist mantle, partly in response to his deep seated opposition to the Bush Administration. Some of his old time conservatism does come out at times, such as his critiques of the Left's cultural liberalism. The book does contain a good deal of autobiography, but occassionally, it is a little self-congratulatory and seems to meander in many different directions but overall, an interesting work by a true American patriot.
