2 out of 5 stars Not the book we would trust   November 19, 2007

I realize that the title of my review will probably upset his devout fans, but this is why I am writing this review: In his own opener he says he bases all of his information on what he was provided by the FDA and the drug companies themselves. This is not an unbiased book.

How many of us have personally or know personally people who were prescribed FDA approved and well-promoted by the drug companies a course of treatment that later was shown to be deadly? And how many news reports does it take to know that some of them were known to be deadly and were approved for public consumption anyway?

My family and I will continue to look for a book that doesn't trust such tainted sources only for their data.

1 out of 5 stars How strange!   October 28, 2007

I think it is strange how we always cling to what Dr. Sears has to say. He is a doctor just like the doctors that actually take a stance and say vaccines are harmful. Yet we scrutinize the doctor who states the truth and praise those who either stay neutral because it is too controversial or say to vaccinate because there isn't enough evidence. How many children must be harmed before there is enough evidence for doctors to take a stance against vaccinations. At least I know my child won't be another statistic among those harmed by vaccines. I hope your's isn't either.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Vaccine Book Out There   October 24, 2007

Finally, some trustworthy information about vaccinations. I just got this book in the mail yesterday, but once I started reading, I was so excited to hear a doctor acknowledge that it is reasonable for parents to be wary of vaccinations and to decide against some of them, that I have read most of it already. The information about flu shots was especially valuable to me, because I didn't know most of it. I was delighted to read that Dr. Sears believes it is a good idea to space out vaccinations for infants and as a mother my instincts told me that from the get go. I feel very vindicated after a very long struggle with our Pediatricians. I also really appreciate the recommended vaccine list that Dr. Sears puts in this book and I think it is the best guide a parent can have. I am so thankful that Dr. Sears decided to write this book and I couldn't be happier with it's contents. It's not pro-vaccine and it's not anti-vaccine. It really takes into account all of the information that is out there about vaccines and definitely takes into account the things that scare many parents away from vaccines. Thank you, Dr. Sears. I have been waiting for a book like this for a very long time.

1 out of 5 stars glib and inadequate   June 16, 2008

As an older baby boomer, I've been shocked and dismayed by the decision of many young parents to not vaccinate their children against the childhood diseases. So, I decided to purchase a few of the popular books and see what was influencing so many parents. I find Dr. Sear's description of many of the diseases glaringly inadequate and confusing. A case in point is his description of polio. His description implies that even the worst cases -those affecting breathing and swallowing - required an iron lung for only a short period of time and voila, the paralysis was over. If I were a young parent reading Dr. Sear's description, I would never see polio as the terrible disease that once affected at least one person we all seemed to know. Our parents were terrified and many children never recovered. Many survivors were left with twisted limbs, one leg smaller and shorter than the other and spinal curves that required surgery. Today, many of those survivors suffer from post-polio syndrome... Dr. Sear's discussion of polio ends with his opinion that polio vaccination is an important public health issue. But, from reading his glib, inadequate description, I don't know what I would decide to do if I were a young parent. Fortunately, my own children appreciate the imporance of vaccination, but today's popular books do little to educate young parents. Shame on Dr. Sears. As a medical provider, he should know better. His job is not to be "Dr.Bob," medical pal to all parents. His job is to provide the real facts: The pre-vaccine era was no picnic. I'm thankful that my children and grandchildren have never had to endure many of the diseases that my peers endured. I pray that the "Dr. Bobs" of the world do not send our country back into the pre-vaccine era.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a parent can get accurate information   October 21, 2007

Reading the book today, I can finally understand what would go into my child if I were to vax. After reading for 6 years online about vax from a variety of sources, I'm still confused. Reading Dr. Sears book I can make an informed decision on what vax my children will and will not get.

The 1st person who left a review did not read the book because Dr. Sears does not discuss austism and vax in length because thats not what the book is about. He simply wanted to discuss each vax in length and why we get that vax and all potential problems that may rise for getting or not getting the vax. He even has guidelines for which vaccines have metals in them and how to avoid them at all possible. He discusses all the ingredients in the vax so we as parents understand everything. No longer must we blindly follow the CDC or the ped in vaccines. We can go in armed and do what is right for our children.
