I Couldn't Wait till I Came to the End May 21, 2007 19 out of 27 found this review helpful
One of the most highly overrated books I've ever read. No plot, little character development, and page after boring page guaranteed to cure even the most intractable case of insomnia. Reading the telephone directory would have been a more worthwhile pursuit. To say the least, I was terribly disappointed. I suggest the author re-enroll in the MFA program at UC Irvine before he attempts another novel.

Confession: I did not read this whole book. I read the first chapter, and I could see no reason to slog through the rest of it. Based on Entertainment Weekly's review, I expected this book to be smartly funny, but it wasn't funny at all to me. I also found the "we" thing very irksome. Fortunately, I got this book from the library, so all I wasted was my time.
Look, I know satire is hit-and-miss. You either find the whole concept funny, or you don't: that's the nature of satire. Well, I didn't find this funny.
I really wanted to like it... April 28, 2007 14 out of 25 found this review helpful
I really wanted to like it. It was high up on the Amazon list; the review in an entertainment magazine gave it a thumbs up. I gave it 100 pages or so before I had to give up. I failed to see the humor in it and I couldn't sympathize or empathize with any of these office folk. I'm just thankful I didn't buy it and could return it to the library.
Then We Came to the End - book review May 14, 2007 13 out of 26 found this review helpful
I am an avid reader, and I read a variety of literary styles. This book definitely rates as one of the WORST books ever written. I purchased this book based on the reviews posted and the synopsis given, and to say the least, I very much regret purchasing it. I could only get through the first chapter, which was 48 pages of agony, boredom and hope for some redeeming feature or character to surface. It is so incredibly dull and boring; the author droned on and on about killing time waiting for an office meeting to begin or an office manager having all the chairs and bookcases listed by user and serial number. Unbelievable! I have worked in an office for over 20 years; I anticipated a funny, light-hearted look at the antics and dynamics in a typical "cubicle world" office, only to get mindless dribble that is not the least bit funny. Needless to say, I do not recommend this book.

My review title reflects one of my ultimate pleasures in life. Another is discovering an outstanding work of fiction and this is my favorite of 2007 so far. It is chock full of flavorful characters, with a middle passage brimming with sadness and pathos, and just overflowing with humor. It melts with pungent dialog, is shot through with ringing tones of truth and real experiences, with a strong finale building to a totally satisfying conclusion (so rare these days when authors seem totally unable to write good endings - don't they teach that skill in school?). I will be sure to savor it more slowly next time.
