WOW! October 5, 2007 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
Got it, love it, you've got to get this! If you want to add nutrition to your baked goods or if you support living compassionately towards animals, this cookbook provides easy to make recipes that will blow you away! Colleen includes traditional goodies- pumpkin pie, chocolate chip cookies, etc. as well as some not so traditional recipes that definitely make this cookbook stand out from the rest. The raspberry jam oatmeal bars are a favorite!
I use it, but I'll look forward to the day a new vegan baking book comes out June 5, 2008 15 out of 17 found this review helpful
I want to start out by saying that I really do enjoy this cookbook, and I use it often, however I believe that is because it is one of the only dedicated vegan baking books out there at the moment.
I was very excited when this came out and I was able to purchase it. It has a wide range of recipes that also includes breads and ethnic treats. Here is the slight problem I have with it. Nearly every recipe requires the use of Egg Replacer, Vegan margarine, regular sugar, and basic all purpose flower. Although in the beginning of the book I believe it talks about the use of substitutes for these items, it doesn't really give many examples of it. In some recipes it uses large quantities of vegan margarine. Basically you can take any non-vegan recipe, look at it and substitute milk for soymilk, butter for vegan margarine and eggs with egg replacer. It does not make the recipes unique, it does not give them much more thought, it doesn't really show off what vegan baking can be in its creativity and health benefits.
Until a better vegan baking book comes out, it is worth the purchase. You can always try your hand at playing around with the recipe ingredients.
Great recipes, but October 23, 2007 13 out of 16 found this review helpful
There are a lot of wonderful recipes in here, but there's also a really big presence of ener g egg replacer- a product I've never been fond of using in baking because it's a little too... obvious? I always taste it immediately. There are many recipes to choose from in here, but a great deal of them do use the egg replacer, which is the main reason I'm going to stick with "Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World" for now.
That is the wonderful thing about this cookbook though- because while I do love me some cupcakes, there is a wide array of baked goods to choose from in here, much more of a selection than I've seen anywhere else.
The MARK for other cook books to only TRY to attain! November 16, 2007 12 out of 14 found this review helpful
In all my years of baking (or cooking for that matter) I have never see a more beautiful and user friendly book. The layout is outstanding. The page stock is impressive, the colors and images outstanding. The book pages lay nicely when the book is open and the recipes are superb. You KNOW you are eating healthy foods and feel good about it. From beginner to experienced veg*n baker/cook, this book is for you. I simply cannot say enough positive about this book. Just look at it and you will know what I mean. Literally superb job Colleen! This is the standard others should shoot for in recipe books!! Very educational as well. LOVE IT
The best baking book, ever! September 28, 2007 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I'm a newbie cook, and I've found Ms. Goudreau's book to be the most comprehensive and beautifully written cookbook I've ever come across so far. The photographs will make your mouth water. I made the Oatmeal Raisin Cookies and my friends and colleagues now think I'm a master baker. They are completely blown away when they find out the cookies contain no animal byproducts. To me that says it all. I'll be giving this book to all my friends and family this Christmas.
