 Great characterization March 27, 2008
I loved the start of this book. In the first chapter, the four friends involved in this tale are introduced with such perfection of writing skills, that I, as a reader, felt I knew them really well. I wanted to know them. With hardly any descriptions longer than a sentence or two, the personalities of all four were craftily brought into focus.
But for me, and sadly, I'll admit, the story didn't quite hold up to the delightful characters. I found the story-telling at times confusing, and the extensive use of italics slowed the action. Ultimatley, I felt that though I really wanted to love this book, for the delightful characters' sakes, I just couldn't finish it by reading every single word . . . and skipped to the final pages.
I will look forward to the author's next book. And I highly recommend this for folks and other authors who want to study how great characters are written. Rarely have I enjoyed an author's ability to breathe life into a YA novel's characters this much.
