Have you found your "it"? July 29, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Overall, this is an enjoyable book, with several positive messages.
As you can probably guess from the title, the main theme is inspirational, intending to motivate, comfort, and reassure children who haven't discovered a special talent yet. But, the underlying themes are equally valuable: parents working together to remind children about appropriate classroom behavior (don't make jokes during class), kindness between siblings, and building a relationship with God through prayer. Tony Dungy's closing was also well done. I especially appreciated his thoughts about the different ways that God answers prayers, which makes it clear that he isn't suggesting using prayer as a type of catalog order to receive all of our dreams.
My daughters were concerned by the brief discussion of saving a baby bird by putting it back in its nest. It was a *very* minor point in the story, and I had to reread the story to find it since it didn't stand out in my mind. But, both of my daughters mentioned it immediately after I finished reading the book aloud. They were worried that readers might try to "help" birds by handling them, since baby birds could be more hurt than helped by human handling.
Other than that minor point, this book is a winner.

This is a very delightful book. It is a very good way to teach children how hope and faith can help you to achieve your desires and goals. It is very easy to read. I also had some small children read the book and they really enjoyed it.
Great message August 5, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Christian parents would find this book great for their children 7-10. The message is encouraging. I don't know many kids who would seriously be worried about figuring out what they will do when they grow up. Still, the kids might be inspired to think about what they want to be. That might help them to try to get good grades in school. (It's a possibility.) I also liked that the book says that God will help him and that God knows what his "it" is. I did worry that children might get confused by what "it" is. I wish the author would have used a phrase like "my dream" instead of "it". The book does explain what "it" is when introducing the concept, however. Regardless, I'm glad this one is in our library.
Well done, Coach! August 13, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I read the book, had my granddaughter read it to her girlfriends and then she shared it with more friends at her 18th birthday party. I intend for my other grands to read it and give a book to my greatgrands. I also gave a book to a friend who has three children and also is affiliated w/ a group of moms with special needs children. I thought it would be good to read to them and their young ones. You Can Do it! is so cute and positive. I like stories based on true-life experiences. Thank you.
Very Sweet August 14, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is about Tony's brother who struggles becuase he just doesn't know what he dreams for and is considered a bit of a showoff. It is about knowing that we can all find our dreams, no matter how big or small, and about having the belief and faith in God to do it. Very sweet and inspirational.
