Slow and disappointing May 23, 2008 8 out of 18 found this review helpful
It's hard to like a book when you form a dislike for the main characters. Holly Ashwin is a self-centered mathematician with an obsessive-compulsive disorder. Cadeon Woede is a mixture of sleazy, shallow demon with an unlimited supply of crude humor.
The story progressed painfully slow for the first 2/3 of the book where the author tried to develop a relationship between the 2 characters, but they just didn't have a lot of chemistry between them.
A most disappointing read especially since I really liked the previous 4 books of the series and was looking forward to this one.
Fantastic story - Cole does it again! May 14, 2008 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Even with some of my favorite paranormal romance series, an author gets to a point where she can't really improve upon her past books or continue to bring anything new or interesting to the table. I figured that it was mostly a consequence of the heavy demand and tight schedules, but Kresley Cole proves that it can be done! I absolutely loved Cadeon and Holly's story, and enjoyed every last page.
Most of this series have been great and earned spots on my keeper shelf, but this book has to be my favorite so far. There are so many layers to the story, all skillfully interwoven. A Valkyrie halfling with OCD tendencies is flung together with a roguish demon mercenary, and the combination really works. Unlike so many paranormals with the whole 'fated mate' plot device, this one actually works - the characterizations and relationship are so well done, as well as the balance between subplots and secondary characters with the main story.
I could rave about this book, but I'll refrain. :) All I'll say is don't miss this book if you're a fan of the genre or this author!
Very Good....but not her BEST May 21, 2008 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I stayed up until 2 in the morning to finish this book (despite having a new baby who wakes at 6AM!!) so you know I really, really liked it.
BUT...
There were a few elements that kept it from 5-star status for me. First, I just didn't like Holly all that much. Her OCD was a cool character device, but something about her just irritated me a bit--though I loved the scene in the bar, while Cade is off in the back room. Perhaps if Holly let loose a bit more she might have been more interesting to me. Of course, I can't compare every heroine to the ultimate Mariketa, right?
Second, through no fault of the author, I found the guy on the cover to be way unattractive. He sort of reminds me of Jason Giambi during the steroid years. I put a little smiley face sticker over his face ('cuz there's no way a sexy "Sith Africin" looks like that dude) and I was good to go. Aside: I've loved all her covers to date and actually my husband joked to me that the guy on the cover of "No Rest for the Wicked" is the spitting image of Roger Federer (what can I say, we're tennis nuts around here). And you know what? He's RIGHT! And the guy on "Wicked Deeds on a Winter's Night" reminds me of Alan Rickman. Ms. Cole--could I request a Rafael Nadal look-alike at some point? Or Feliciano Lopez. I'd settle for him.
Third, the end for me was a little rushed. I didn't leave the book feeling warm and fuzzy--it felt like things were unfinished somehow, as though this is a bridge book. Eh--no biggie. But it does make me very impatient for Rydstrom's story, especially since I can kind of see where the author is headed--and I like it! More, please.
Anyhoo, good read, good plot, lots of tension and does anyone write hotter love scenes? My mother would be clutching her pearls and fanning herself with the book jacket if she had the guts to read one of these (which she doesn't). I also LOVED the accent on the demon. I could practically hear the charming little lilt when Cade would speak to Holly.
For the record, this probably would have been a 5-star review if I hadn't just finished Wicked Deeds and Dark Needs in quick succession. I was able to see just how GREAT this author can be so this one fell the teeniest bit short for me.
What the heck am I gonna do until the next book in the series comes out? I guess I'll have to, like, pay attention to my kid or get back to "real life" or something. Darn.
Absolutely her best! May 19, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I've really enjoyed every book in this series, but this one is by far the best! I had trouble finishing it, only because I would think about previous scenes and have to go back and re-read them. I still managed to finish it in one day. It was definitely a romance, but it was so different than what I usually read that it had me holding my breath to see what they would do next. Don't miss this one!
Whew, Fan me down Please! May 22, 2008 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
Hottest hero of the series goes to the demon with very lickable horns. Wasn't sure how the whole demon thing was going to play and I was happily surprised to find a well thought out hero who played nicely off our sexy OCD heroine. Holls did a terrific job with a horrible situation and you had to root for her the whole way. Great dialog through out - the getting to know you portion of the plot was a hoot. Hhowever the ending seemed abrupt and hurried; there are many plot points that are unanswered. Which only leaves me to pine for the next book in the series which is a long, long, loooooong wait away.
